In the vibrant city of Portland, siblings Lindsey (Aleisha Allen) and Kevin (Philip Bolden) Kingston devise a crafty plan to ensure their divorced mother, Suzanne (Nia Long), remains single until their parents can rekindle their romance. Meanwhile, Nick Persons (Ice Cube), a rugged man with a notable disdain for kids, just acquired a shiny new Lincoln Navigator. Not only is he proud of it, but he also has a quirky bobblehead of the legendary Satchel Paige, whose unexpected life adds a comedic twist, as only Nick can hear his clever quips.

One evening, fate brings Nick and Suzanne together once more when he spots her struggling with her car. He kindly offers her a ride, and as the days turn into weeks, their relationship blossoms. They bond over shared experiences, and their connection deepens like the roots of an ancient oak. Just before New Year’s Eve, Nick drives Suzanne to the airport for a work trip to Vancouver when her ex-husband, Frank, calls, revealing his sudden illness and inability to take the children, leaving Suzanne no choice but to ask Nick for help with their care.

Upon reaching her home, Nick reconnects with Lindsey and Kevin, whose playful banter fills the atmosphere. Their adventure to the airport takes a wild turn when a corkscrew—a gift from Nick—faces scrutiny in security, leading to a comical altercation. In a bid to escape the chaos, they hop on a train, but Lindsey and Kevin jump off last minute for a prized action figure’s cape, compelling Nick to follow suit, leaving behind their luggage. With time running out, they decide to embark on an improvised road trip.

As the mischief unfolds, Lindsey and Kevin’s perceptions of Nick transform when they overhear his frustrated phone conversation, revealing his disdain for them and conflicting emotions about their mother. Furious, Kevin pretends to have an asthma attack to lock Nick out of the car, as Lindsey clumsily tries to drive away, resulting in a raucous chase that ends in a dramatic crash into a life-sized butcher statue.

Unfazed, Nick follows them through the wilderness, facing car troubles after mistaken actions lead to significant wreckage. When the siblings arrive at their father’s home, they discover that he has been lying about his illness and has already started a new family. Feeling lost and betrayed, they begin to connect with Nick, sharing poignant moments as he reveals his own hurt from abandonment.

Throughout their journey, they encounter various misadventures, including Kevin’s exuberance leading to a messy vomiting incident, and a deer encounter that results in lost car keys. In a frenzy to fix their circumstances, Nick’s attempt to hotwire their car leads to a comical disaster with explosive results. Overwhelmed but determined, Nick apologizes, acknowledging their growing relationship despite the chaos they’ve shared.

As the smoke clears, Nick’s attempt to secure help goes awry when Al Buck, a truck driver, misreads their situation, sparking a chase that lands them in Vancouver. In a dramatic moment, Nick showcases his heroics when Kevin has a severe asthma attack, prompting him to act quickly to save the day. In the aftermath, Suzanne begins to doubt her judgment of Nick, but guided by Satchel’s wisdom, she realizes the valuable bond forming between her children and Nick.

With a change of heart, Suzanne seeks out Nick in his hotel just as the new year begins, leading to a heartfelt confession and a romantic kiss, much to the delight of Lindsey and Kevin. Their journey, filled with unexpected turns and emotional growth, culminates in a celebration of love and new beginnings.
