What is Lazarus Redd's profession before the events of the film?

Plot Summary

The narrative revolves around two complex protagonists: Lazarus Redd (a devout farmer and former blues musician) and Rae Doole (a young individual struggling with sex addiction). The film’s emotional core lies in the tumultuous past of these characters. For Lazarus, the memories of his wife’s infidelity and his brother’s betrayal have left a deep scar, cultivating an atmosphere of resentment and anger. On the other hand, Rae’s boyfriend Ronnie Morgan deploys with the 196th Field Artillery Brigade, Tennessee National Guard, prompting her to succumb to reckless indulgences, including substance abuse and promiscuity.

One fateful night, while in the midst of a binge, Rae is brutally beaten by Gill Morton, who attempts to take advantage of her. Believing she’s met her demise, Gill dispassionately abandons Rae at the roadside, leaving her to suffer in nothing but her undergarments and a crop top.

The next morning, Lazarus stumbles upon Rae’s unconscious form and, driven by a sense of moral obligation, brings her back to his farmhouse to nurse her back to health. As Rae regains consciousness, she’s met with a mixture of concern and judgment from Lazarus, who becomes convinced that it’s his spiritual duty to guide her away from her sinful lifestyle. This conviction is reinforced when he discovers the extent of her promiscuity.

Rae, still reeling from the aftermath of her beating, periodically awakens and attempts to flee from Lazarus’ clutches. In an effort to prevent further escape attempts, he chains her to a radiator, effectively trapping her in his farmhouse. As Rae’s physical wounds begin to heal, she starts to develop a begrudging tolerance for her circumstances. Lazarus, sensing her growing acceptance, takes steps to improve her modesty by gifting her a sundress and showers her with small acts of kindness, such as playing the guitar for her and preparing home-cooked meals.

Meanwhile, R.L., Lazarus’ pastor and close friend, pays him a visit and is shocked to discover Rae’s imprisonment. The pair share a meal together, and R.L.’s presence serves as a catalyst for Lazarus to question his actions.

As the story unfolds, Ronnie returns to town after being discharged from the National Guard due to his severe anxiety disorder. His search for Rae leads him to Gill, who reveals her infidelity. Enraged by this revelation, Ronnie attacks Gill and steals his truck before continuing his search for Rae.

As the dawn breaks, Lazarus sets Rae free from his moral constraints, recognizing that he has no authority to dictate her fate. Her decision to remain by his side is a testament to her unwavering resolve. That evening, as the storm clouds gather, Rae requests a serenade, and Lazarus obliges, pouring his soul into a heartfelt rendition of “Black Snake Moan” by Blind Lemon Jefferson. The melody seems to weave a spell around them, drawing them closer together.

As they venture into town, Rae confronts her mother about the painful memories of abuse inflicted by her partner. Meanwhile, Lazarus has been nurturing a romantic connection with Angela, the local pharmacist, whose warmth and kindness have drawn him in. He takes the stage at a local bar, his bluesy performance drawing Rae to the venue. It is there that Ronnie spots her, his possessive instincts piqued. With a pistol in hand, he confronts the pair, but Lazarus’ calm demeanor soothes the situation, and they summon the pastor to mediate.

As the dust settles, Ronnie and Rae realize that their bond is stronger than any obstacle. In a poignant display of vulnerability, they decide to take the plunge and marry each other. As they drive away into the sunset, Ronnie’s panic attack returns, but this time, Rae joins him in his struggles, her own spell-like state giving way to determination. Together, they resolve to support each other through life’s trials and tribulations, their love a beacon of hope in the face of adversity.
