Most coal mines in China rely heavily on migrant workers who endure grueling and perilous conditions just to send money back home. However, some of these workers have their own schemes that go beyond mere survival.

In this intense narrative, we meet Song Jinming (played by Li Yixiang) and Tang Zhaoyang (played by Wang Shuangbao), two seasoned con artists who have mastered an elaborate scam through relentless practice. They set their sights on a naive young man eager for employment and convince him they have lined up three lucrative coal mining jobs for themselves and a missing relative. To seal the deal, they offer him the opportunity to pose as the absent relative, but this arrangement harbors deadly intentions.

Once the young man starts working at the mine, the chilling plot unfolds: the duo murders him and stages the act to appear as a tragic accident. This gruesome deception allows them to extort compensation money from the mine’s management for the supposed loss.

As the story progresses, we follow the con artists as they target a new victim, Yuan Fengming (played by Wang Baoqiang), who is just sixteen years old. Tension mounts within the duo as Song begins to experience doubts; he is haunted by the youth and innocence of Yuan and is struck by how much Yuan’s father resembles the first victim. Meanwhile, Tang remains purely motivated by greed, determined to provide for his own family without regard for the moral implications of their actions.
