Plot Summary

In 2002, the Evans family’s dynamics were set in motion when 6-year-old Mason, played with a quiet introspection by Ellar Coltrane, shared a small Texas home with his mother Olivia and 8-year-old sister Samantha. Despite his sharp intellect, Mason struggled to focus at school, often finding himself lost in thought or destructive tendencies taking over. His mother, played by the talented Patricia Arquette, was juggling the demands of single parenthood, leaving little time for herself.

As the year progressed, Olivia’s relationship with her boyfriend Ted became increasingly strained, with arguments and broken dates becoming a regular occurrence. It seemed as though the universe was conspiring against her, forcing her to cancel plans at the last minute.

In 2003, the family made the bold decision to uproot their lives and relocate to Houston, allowing Olivia to pursue higher education at the University of Houston and secure a better future for herself and her children. The new home brought with it a sense of excitement, as Mason and Samantha claimed their own rooms and indulged in the luxury of a backyard pool.

However, this newfound freedom also brought its challenges, particularly in the form of sibling rivalry between the two young siblings. They frequently clashed, their tempers flaring as they struggled to navigate their complex emotions. In times of need, Olivia’s mother Catherine stepped in, providing a steady presence and guidance for her grandchildren.

As 2004 dawned, Mason’s life was further disrupted by the arrival of his father, Mason Sr., played with a rugged intensity by Ethan Hawke. The elder Mason brought with him a newfound sense of uncertainty, as he weighed the pros and cons of reuniting with his family in Houston versus remaining in Alaska.

The tension between Mason Sr. and Olivia simmered just below the surface, threatening to boil over at any moment. As they exchanged heated words, Mason and Samantha watched from the sidelines, their own emotions in turmoil. The children’s grandmother Catherine was supposed to provide a safe haven for them, but her failure to do so only added to the family’s stress.

In this climate of uncertainty, Olivia took Mason under her wing, introducing him to her professor Bill Welbrock, played with a charming suaveness by Marco Perella. As they chatted and laughed together, Mason couldn’t help but notice the flirtatious undercurrent between his mother and Bill.

As 2005 arrived, the Evans family underwent a significant transformation. Olivia and Bill exchanged vows, blending their two families into one. The newlyweds embarked on a romantic European honeymoon, leaving the children in the capable hands of Catherine.

During this time, Mason found solace in his new friendships with Samantha’s step-siblings, Mindy and Randy. He also formed a bond with Nicole, played by Jessi Mechler, who harbored a secret crush on him. As they navigated the challenges of middle school together, Mason began to find his footing in this ever-changing world.

As the years unfold, Mason and Samantha form a deeper bond with Mason Sr., as he devotes quality time to his grandsons. In 2006, they embark on a series of memorable adventures in Houston, including a visit to an aviary, a game of hide and seek at the park, and a fun-filled afternoon playing catch. The highlight of their day is a trip to a Houston Astros game, followed by a sleepover at Mason Sr.’s house, where he’s just celebrated passing his second actuarial exam.

Meanwhile, Olivia continues her education and initially supports Bill’s strict parenting style, which includes assigning various chores to the children - dusting, doing dishes, cleaning the backyard, and raking leaves. However, things take a turn when Bill enforces Mason’s shaving of his long hair without consulting him first, leading to feelings of resentment. Olivia’s busy schedule at school means she has little time for her family, further exacerbating the tension.

As 2007 dawns, Bill’s behavior becomes increasingly erratic and abusive due to his growing alcoholism. A confrontation with Olivia over his drinking habits ultimately leads to a violent outburst, prompting her to make the difficult decision to leave Bill and take Mason and Samantha in tow. They seek refuge at their friend Carol’s (Barbara Chisholm) house, where they start anew.

In the aftermath of their departure, Olivia faces an uncertain future, as she struggles to come to terms with her new reality. She relocates her assets before Bill can freeze them, ensuring financial stability for her children. Meanwhile, Samantha feels abandoned by her mother, who is unable to locate her biological father.

Mason and Samantha settle into a new school and start their social lives from scratch. They begin to navigate the challenges of adolescence, including Mason Sr.’s concerns about Samantha’s budding romance with Garret. In 2008, Mason Sr. takes his son on a camping trip, where they bond over music, film, and Mason’s emerging interest in girls.

As Mason Sr. settles into his new life with Tammy (Tamara Jolaine), he finds solace in his work at an insurance company. He becomes a steady presence in the lives of his grandsons, offering them guidance and support as they grow up in San Marcos, a charming town near Austin.

Here is a rephrased version of the section:

As 2009 unfolds, Mason’s elementary school experiences are marred by bullying and teasing from peers, which only intensifies on a camping trip where he’s playfully mocked for his virginity. However, this same year, he begins to garner attention from girls, a development that contrasts sharply with his earlier struggles. Meanwhile, Olivia takes up a teaching post in psychology at the local college and moves into a cozy residence with Jim (Brad Hawkins), an Iraq War veteran and her student.

As 2010 dawns, Mason finds himself navigating the treacherous landscape of high school, where he experiments with marijuana and alcohol as a means of coping. His father, Mason Sr., who has remarried and welcomed a new addition to the family, takes his children on a visit to meet their step-grandparents, an encounter that yields a suit, CDs, and a shotgun for Mason’s 15th birthday. In stark contrast, his step-grandparents bestow upon him a Bible, a symbol of spiritual guidance that contrasts with the worldly temptations he’s encountering.

In 2011, Mason’s photography teacher chastises him for lacking ambition, urging him to tap into his latent potential. This same year, Mason becomes romantically entangled with Sheena (Zoe Graham), who becomes his girlfriend. The family’s financial situation worsens when Olivia and Jim ultimately decide to go their separate ways, leaving them reeling from the emotional fallout.

As 2012 progresses, Mason and Sheena embark on a visit to Samantha, now enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin, where they share their hopes and fears about college life. However, this moment of intimacy is short-lived, as they’re discovered asleep together in their roommate’s dormitory, an incident that sets off a chain reaction of events.

In 2013, Mason faces a painful breakup with Sheena, takes home the silver medal at the state photography contest, and earns a coveted college scholarship. As graduation looms, Mason Sr. offers his son sage advice on how to navigate the aftermath of heartbreak. Meanwhile, Olivia implores her children to sort through their belongings as they prepare for life after high school. The year culminates with Mason leaving for Sul Ross State University in Alpine, where he meets his new roommate Dalton (Maximillian McNamara), Dalton’s girlfriend Barb (Taylor Weaver), and Barb’s roommate Nicole. In a bid to unwind, the group heads out on a hike at Big Bend Ranch State Park, only to have their collective consciousness shifted by Nicole’s poignant observation that it’s not people who seize moments – rather, moments seize people.
