As Alice Marano and Darlene Davis say goodbye to their high school years, they set off on a life-changing adventure to Thailand. Darlene cleverly hides her fib about going to Hawaii from her father. Surrounded by the stunning landscapes, their journey takes an unexpected turn when they meet Nick Parks, a charming Australian who is, unbeknownst to them, a cunning drug trafficker.
Darlene quickly becomes infatuated with Nick and persuades Alice to accompany him on a spontaneous trip to Hong Kong. This excursion, however, soon proves to be a dangerous misstep. As they attempt to leave from Don Mueang International Airport, the girls are arrested by Thai authorities who reveal that one of their bags contains a stash of heroin—evidence they claim was planted by Nick. A grueling interrogation begins, during which Darlene unwittingly signs a false confession in Thai, mistakenly believing it’s a simple statement of her innocence.
Their subsequent trial offers no comfort, as the girls receive a staggering sentence of 33 years in prison. In a desperate search for justice, they reach out to Hank Greene, an expatriate American lawyer who has made Thailand his home. With his sharp mind, Hank uncovers an astonishing truth: Nick Parks is actually Skip K. Carn, a notorious drug smuggler known for using unsuspecting women as mules. This revelation not only clears Alice’s name but also exposes Nick’s deceitful tactic of alerting the Thai authorities, using the girls as a diversionary ruse for his own illicit activities.
While in prison, Darlene struggles to adjust to a life filled with violence, squalor, and overwhelming isolation, causing a strain on her relationship with Alice. Darlene is frustrated with Alice’s initial connection to Nick, leading her to believe Alice has betrayed her trust. Adding to the tension, Darlene’s father places the blame for their situation squarely on Alice’s shoulders.
As time drifts by, Darlene’s emotional and physical health deteriorates, leading her to make a desperate escape attempt, which results in longer sentences for both women. The consequences of their misjudgments continue to loom large as they grapple with the grim realities of prison life.
Amidst the pervasive corruption surrounding Nick’s life, Hank skillfully maneuvers through the complexities of the Thai legal system to negotiate a deal that could save the girls. In a turn of events, the prosecutor offers them a pardon in exchange for retracting their allegations and accepting full responsibility for the drug smuggling. Initially resistant, the girls ultimately accept the terms, only to be betrayed by someone they had trusted.
As Alice copes with the burden of responsibility, she finds herself in tears, pleading with the Thai monarch to allow her to serve both sentences concurrently—a plea aimed at securing Darlene’s freedom. The monarch agrees, and Darlene is released, promising to work alongside Hank in an effort to liberate Alice as well.
In a heartfelt voicemail meant only for Hank’s ears, Alice expresses her quiet conviction, recognizing that her selfless choice may never be fully understood. Nonetheless, she remains resolute, knowing that her sacrifice is the essential step to ensuring Darlene’s release and their ongoing fight for justice.
