What is Jim Dodge's job at Target?

Plot Summary

Twenty-one-year-old Jim Dodge, self-proclaimed “people person” and dreamer, had long struggled with his reputation as lazy and good-for-nothing. After a string of low-paying jobs ended in termination, Jim was faced with an ultimatum from his father, Bud Dodge: take a job at the local Target or be sent to St. Louis to work for his uncle. With no clear direction in sight, Jim reluctantly accepted the offer and began his new role as a night cleanup boy.

On his first shift, Jim found himself alone in the store after his boss, the head custodian, left him to finish out the night. It was during this solitary time that he crossed paths with Josie McClellan, a beautiful and enigmatic young woman who had been hiding in a dressing room. Unbeknownst to Jim, Josie had spent the previous hours asleep, having fled the scene after attempting to shoplift merchandise in a desperate bid to escape her abusive father, Roger Roy McClellan.

As the night wore on, Jim and Josie formed an unlikely connection, realizing that despite their vastly different backgrounds, they shared a deep sense of restlessness. Their budding relationship blossomed as they explored the empty store, reveling in the freedom it offered. With Josie’s considerable wealth - a staggering $52,000 hidden away in her purse - she convinced Jim to join her on a wild adventure, convincing him to abandon his mundane life and set out for Los Angeles with her at dawn.

Meanwhile, Roger McClellan had teamed up with the town sheriff to conduct an all-night search for his errant daughter. Little did they know that Josie was already in motion, having secretly convinced one of two bumbling thieves, Nestor Pyle and Gil Kinney, to take her along on their getaway. As the pair loaded stolen goods into their vehicle, Josie made a daring escape, jumping behind the wheel and speeding away, leaving her would-be captors stranded in the parking lot.

Back at the Target store, Jim had found a shotgun in the head custodian’s locker and was waiting patiently for his chance to strike. With Nestor and Gil returning to the scene, Jim expertly lured them into a trap, using the shotgun to hold them at gunpoint until they were discovered by the sheriff arriving on the scene.

In the aftermath of their daring escape, Jim and Josie slipped away from the chaos and found themselves lounging by a sparkling pool in Hollywood, surrounded by the bright lights and endless possibilities of the city.
