CASTING ABOUT is a beautifully crafted feature documentary that delves into the intriguing world of casting actors. From the perspective of a filmmaker, audiences are treated to the insights and experiences of over 350 actresses who auditioned for three key roles in a dramatic film. The documentary showcases captivating footage from auditions held across major cities such as Berlin, Boston, Chicago, London, and Los Angeles, seamlessly blending actor interviews, poignant monologues, and various scene work to form an impressionistic tapestry of the casting journey.
In late 2000, filmmaker Barry J. Hershey embarked on the quest to cast actresses for a dramatic film he co-wrote and aimed to direct. His intention was to integrate some of the casting footage into the final fictional piece, a concept that emerged from his initial casting experiences during film school over two decades ago. After meticulously reviewing more than 70 hours of casting footage, Hershey made the pivotal decision to transform this abundance of material into a standalone film.
As viewers, we are placed in the filmmaker’s seat, observing the actors as they showcase their talents while also gaining insight into their personal lives, vulnerabilities, and dreams. The documentary provocatively examines the fine line between fiction and reality, exploring the nuanced relationship between voyeurism and intimacy.
Featuring compelling performances from 184 actresses, the film includes monologues inspired by the works of celebrated contemporary playwrights such as Eric Bogosian, David Hare, Richard LaGravenese, Susan Miller, Keith Reddin, Nina Shengold, and Alfred Uhry. CASTING ABOUT not only navigates the complexities of the casting process but also honors the rigorous artistry involved in the craft of acting.
