Plot Summary

In a world where showgirls like Connie (actress) and Carla live by their own rules, these two musical theater enthusiasts have been stuck in a rut, their lifelong friendship and shared passion for song and dance failing to translate into a successful career. Undeterred, they continue to defy the odds, hosting an eclectic variety act at an airport lounge that’s equal parts cabaret and comedy club. But when fate intervenes in the form of a mafia hit gone wrong in Chicago, they find themselves on the run, fleeing to Los Angeles with nothing but their wits and their trusty songbooks.

After a series of misadventures, including a stint at a beauty salon that ends with them getting the boot, they concoct a plan to reinvent themselves as drag queens, auditioning for a gig at a gay club called The Handlebar. Their unorthodox approach pays off, and they land the job, hosting a variety show that becomes an instant hit under their new stage names, Connie and Carla and the Belles of the Balls. As the show gains momentum, they recruit a few friends to join the act, including Robert’s (character) brother Jeff, who unknowingly becomes embroiled in their wild ride.

As Connie and Carla’s popularity grows, so does the tension between them. They’ve made a pact to keep men at bay, but when Connie starts to develop feelings for Jeff, it threatens to upend their carefully constructed world. Meanwhile, they convince Stanley, the club owner, to transform their variety show into a full-fledged dinner theater, and their star continues to rise.

But just as things are reaching new heights, the mafia killers who’ve been tracking them finally catch up, descending upon the dinner theater on its official opening night. In a thrilling climax that has the audience in stitches, Connie and Carla team up with their drag queen friends to take down the mobsters, turning what could have been a deadly confrontation into an unforgettable spectacle.

In the aftermath of the chaos, Connie and Carla reveal their true identities to the audience, who surprise them by embracing their authenticity. Connie finally musters the courage to confess her feelings to Jeff, who shows up just in time to accept her for who she is – drag queen and all. As the curtain closes on this wild and wacky ride, it’s clear that these two showgirls have finally found their true calling: as themselves, unapologetically and unashamedly.
