Timid accountant Jonathan McQuarry, Ewan McGregor, leads a rather uneventful, solitary life filled with numbers and balance sheets. One fateful evening, while burning the midnight oil in a large boardroom, he encounters the charismatic lawyer Wyatt Bose, Hugh Jackman, who disrupts his monotonous routine. Their unexpected conversation evolves into a budding friendship, leading Wyatt to introduce Jonathan to marijuana—an adventure that Jonathan has never dared to embark upon before. After a delightful exchange, Jonathan heads home via the subway, where he catches a glimpse of a mysterious blond woman, instantly falling in love with her at first sight as he waits for the train.
Upon returning to his apartment, Jonathan discovers a pipe leak that leaves a rather unsightly stain on his ceiling, a fitting metaphor for the chaos soon to unfold in his life. The following day, he seeks out Wyatt, and their camaraderie deepens as they engage in a friendly game of tennis. Following their match, they retreat to Wyatt’s opulent apartment where Jonathan borrows a luxurious suit—an endeavor that feels foreign yet thrilling. The duo ventures out to a swanky club, their night brimming with possibilities. During a subsequent lunch, Wyatt mentions an impending business trip to London, and in a twist of fate, inadvertently takes Jonathan’s mobile phone instead of his own, setting the stage for a series of confounding events.
When Jonathan realizes the mix-up, he reaches out to Wyatt, only to find his calls go unanswered. Out of the blue, he receives a call from a mysterious woman who invites him out, and without hesitation, he agrees. Their rendezvous quickly escalates as they head to a hotel room, and Jonathan recognizes that Wyatt must be a part of an exclusive list of individuals involved in recreational escapades. The following day, Wyatt encourages Jonathan to explore this list more, stating he has no qualms about Jonathan using it. As Jonathan makes his inaugural connection, he meets a striking older woman who elucidates the list’s unique rules: initiators must cover the cost of the room, identities are kept secret, and conversations are kept to a minimum. Intrigued, Jonathan learns that many who partake are businesspeople seeking fleeting connections in their high-pressure lifestyles.
The encounters rapidly multiply, yet nothing prepares Jonathan for the shocking moment when his partner turns out to be the enchanting blond woman he previously met at the subway station. Overwhelmed by nostalgia, Jonathan suggests they share dinner instead of succumbing to the usual routine. They indulge in room service and engage in deep, meaningful conversation for hours, yet she remains elusive about her name, maintaining an air of mystery that enthralls Jonathan.
However, as Jonathan begins to develop feelings for her, he makes the impulsive decision to reject other callers from the list, much to his surprise when she rings him again. They arrange to meet for dinner in Chinatown but under eerie circumstances, the woman vanishes from their hotel room, leaving Jonathan bewildered amidst blood-stained sheets. As paranoia sends him spiraling, he turns to the authorities, only to find his account of the events met with skepticism from Detective Russo (played by Lisa Gay Hamilton), who doubts the validity of his claims and considers the possibility that he might be delusional.
As Jonathan’s investigation into Wyatt’s true identity deepens, he learns that the man he thought he knew may vanish from existence. Upon returning home one day, he’s startled to find Wyatt waiting for him, claiming to have the blond woman in his possession. In a tense negotiation, Wyatt proposes a sinister arrangement that involves Jonathan stealing millions from a corporation he is set to audit. With little choice, Jonathan agrees, plunging him deeper into a world of deceit.
Further revelations unfold when an unexpected call comes from Tina (Maggie Q), the woman who facilitated Jonathan’s introduction to Wyatt and the list. She exposes Wyatt’s true name, Jamie Getz, and divulges jarring details about his criminal past— including a chilling murder. When Jonathan learns that a woman matching the blond’s description has been found deceased, his horror mounts as he realizes he may be ensnared in a treacherous web that could frame him for murder.
Desperation mounts as he complies with Wyatt’s demands and executes a wire transfer, unwittingly distancing himself from the scant chance of clearing his name. But, when the stakes heighten and betrayal unfolds, Wyatt’s duplicitous nature comes forth; Jonathan cleverly added a cosigner to ensure Wyatt’s impending plans collapse. As tensions reach a breaking point, Jonathan narrowly escapes an attempted murder by Wyatt, culminating in a wild chase that ends with an unexpected hero: the blond woman, now revealed to be as entangled in this chaotic world as Jonathan.
In a poignant closing scene set against the picturesque backdrop of Spain, Jonathan encounters the blond woman once again. Their eyes meet, filled with unresolved emotions and unspoken questions, as the film concludes with an ambiguous yet hopeful note— a promise of a future filled with possibilities as they walk towards each other, setting aside the twisted past for a chance at new beginnings.
