Maben, a mother trying to survive in a bleak and dangerous world, is desperately searching for a way to keep her daughter, Annalee, safe and fed. The story unfolds as she attempts to navigate a life filled with hardship and uncertainty, often relying on fleeting opportunities to survive each night. One night, while looking out from a motel window, she notices that truck drivers sometimes pay women for companionship. As she steps away, she is unexpectedly approached by a police officer who calls her over. What follows is a disturbing account of abuse; the officer forcibly detains her, mistaking her for a sex worker. Despite her protests and pleas that she has a daughter to care for, he exploits her situation—taking her to a remote location and demanding she remove her clothes. Fearing that resisting will land her behind bars and endanger her chance to be with Annalee, Maben complies, only to be met with further degradation as the officer calls in his friends and shows her degrading treatment.

In a moment of supreme desperation, Maben asks if she can sit on the hood of the police car naked to impress the officer’s friends. When the officer turns away, she seizes her chance, grabbing his pistol and pointing it at him, driven by her unwavering will to reach her daughter at all costs. Despite her initial hesitation, her desperation overcomes her as she fires, fatally shooting the officer. She then flees from the scene, clutching Annalee, not knowing what awaits her next. Her sole focus is on survival, and she runs into the night with a renewed sense of purpose.

Meanwhile, Russell [Garrett Hedlund], having recently been released after serving a seven-year sentence for drunk driving that resulted in a fatality, faces the daunting reality of confronting his past. At his arrival, he encounters Larry and Walt—brothers of the victim—who immediately remind him that he owes them for what he’s done. The emotional tension is tense and palpable as they warn him of his debt and the violence he might face. Russell also seeks out his father, Mitchell [Mel Gibson], who resides peacefully with his lover, [Valerie Jane Parker’s] character, Consuela. Mitchell advises Russell to move on, emphasizing that his past should no longer define him, and offers him a rifle for protection—a symbol of their complex, yet caring relationship.

Throughout the story, Russell reconnects with old friends, including Boyd [Shiloh Fernandez], a police officer hunting for his fellow officer’s killer. Their relationship hints at mutual respect, despite the undercurrents of suspicion and past trauma. Russell struggles with his inner demons, feeling imprisoned by his past and the heavy burden of guilt. As Maben confesses her past, Russell reveals a heartbreaking truth: seven years ago, after a tragic accident on a hill caused by his drunk driving, his reckless actions resulted in the death of Jason, Maben’s lover and Annalee’s father. This revelation robs her of her last peace, yet she begins to process her vengeance and regret, understanding that her desire for retribution must give way to healing. Russell urges her to destroy the pistol—symbolically letting go of her anger—and she throws it into a pond, starting her path forward.

The narrative explores the destructive cycles of revenge and guilt, especially through Larry’s character. Consumed by a desire to kill Russell, Larry, who is also struggling with the loss of Jason, frequently visits Russell’s residence, attempting to confront him. Each encounter turns increasingly violent until one night, Larry manages to break into Russell’s house. A confrontation ensues, and Russell is forced to defend himself. In a last-ditch effort, Mitchell intervenes, shooting Larry with a shotgun and saving Russell’s life, but Larry’s relentless pursuit of revenge ultimately leads to him driving his car into police barricades, ending his life.
