What is the profession of Lloyd Christmas?

Plot Summary

In this cinematic tale, we meet Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carrey), a guileless limousine driver in Providence, Rhode Island, whose life is forever changed when he becomes smitten with his passenger, Mary Swanson (Lauren Holly). As he chauffeurs her to the airport, Lloyd’s infatuation grows, and his subsequent retrieval of her abandoned briefcase before a pair of nefarious thugs can claim it sets in motion a chain of events that will upend his life. Meanwhile, Harry Dunne (Jeff Daniels), Lloyd’s roommate and proprietor of a pet grooming business, is struggling to make ends meet after sinking his life savings into a refurbished 1984 Ford Econoline, which he has dubbed the “sheepdog.” Both men are left reeling when they lose their jobs due to a series of unfortunate mishaps, leaving them feeling adrift and desperate for a fresh start.

As Lloyd and Harry navigate this uncertain landscape, they become embroiled in a web of intrigue and deception. Believing Lloyd is a professional hired by the Swansons or perhaps an FBI agent, the thugs exact revenge on the duo, leading to a series of escalating misadventures. When these same thugs show up at their doorstep, brandishing weapons and demanding recompense for perceived slights, Lloyd and Harry are forced to flee through the back window with the briefcase in tow.

As they embark on a journey to find new opportunities, Lloyd’s fixation on Mary only intensifies, leading him to concoct a harebrained scheme to deliver the briefcase to its rightful owner in Aspen. Harry is initially skeptical of this plan but eventually comes around after being persuaded by his friend’s unwavering optimism. The two set off for Colorado, unaware that the thugs are hot on their heels, determined to exact revenge and claim the valuable package for themselves.

As they embark on their journey to the snowy retreat of Aspen, Harry and Lloyd find themselves entangled in a series of misadventures that test the limits of their friendship. A stop at a diner turns into a comical confrontation with Sea Bass (Cam Neely), whose burger gets an unexpected topping courtesy of Harry’s errant saltshaker. In an attempt to smooth things over, the duo offers to treat Sea Bass and his cohorts to beers, but Lloyd’s impulsive decision to put the drinks on their host’s tab leads to a hasty exit - and a brief encounter with a police officer (Harland Williams) in Pennsylvania.

Days later, Harry and Lloyd pick up Joe ‘Mental’ Mentalino (Mike Starr), whose car has broken down, only to be followed by one of his associates (Karen Duffy). When the trio stops for lunch, Lloyd’s thoughtless decision to share their food with Joe inadvertently leads to a fatal mistake - and a guilt-ridden Lloyd must come to terms with the consequences. The friends’ missteps continue as they accidentally take a wrong turn, leaving them stranded in Nebraska instead of Colorado. Harry’s frustration boils over, and he begins walking back to Aspen, only for Lloyd to cunningly trade their van for a scooter, rejoining his friend on the road.

As the night wears on, Harry and Lloyd find themselves shivering in a park, unable to recall Mary’s last name or locate her in the phone directory. Their desperation leads to a scuffle, which ultimately reveals the shocking truth: the briefcase is filled with a substantial sum of ransom money left behind by Mary at the airport terminal in exchange for her kidnapped husband - a fact Lloyd remains blissfully unaware of.

With their newfound wealth, Harry and Lloyd decide to live it up, tracking every expenditure with meticulous “I.O.U.’s” but ultimately succumbing to their extravagant impulses. They indulge in luxurious accommodations, a high-performance Lamborghini Diablo, elaborate makeovers, and garish, candy-colored tuxedos complete with matching top hats and canes (Harry’s a dashing sky blue, while Lloyd’s a vibrant tangerine). As they revel in their newfound wealth, Lloyd becomes smitten with Mary, mistakenly believing she shares his romantic interest. Harry, on the other hand, mistakes her friendly demeanor towards him for a romantic overture, leading to a rift between the friends as they misinterpret Mary’s affections.

As night descends, Lloyd makes a calculated move, paying a visit to Mary’s abode with the intention of reintroducing himself and requesting her presence at his hotel suite. His ultimate goal is to retrieve the briefcase, but fate has other plans. Unbeknownst to them, they soon find themselves in the crosshairs of Nicholas Andre, a cunning operative with ties to the Swanson family. As they enter Lloyd’s hotel room, Andre seizes control, holding them hostage at gunpoint. The tension is palpable as Lloyd reveals the shocking truth: the briefcase is now filled with nothing but worthless I.O.U.’s, leaving Andre enraged and the duo in a precarious situation.

As events unfold, Harry bursts into the scene, demanding that Andre put an end to his life. In a chilling twist, Andre complies, and just as Lloyd’s fate seems sealed, Harry re-emerges, firing shots at Andre, but ultimately missing his mark. The FBI intervenes, revealing their prior knowledge of Andre’s involvement and the kidnapping scheme. They had, in fact, equipped Harry with a gun and bulletproof vest before he entered the hotel room.

As the dust settles, Mary is reunited with her husband, leaving Lloyd stunned and unaware that she was even married. His psyche is further disturbed by a vivid hallucination of himself committing murder, but it’s interrupted when Mary introduces him to her spouse.

With their financial situation dire, Lloyd and Mary embark on a journey home, only to inadvertently turn down an opportunity to work as oil boys for Hawaiian Tropic bikini models. Instead, they stumble upon a chance to explore a nearby town, where they decide to walk off together, basking in the excitement of potentially touring the country, rubbing shoulders with beautiful women before their shows. Harry offers words of encouragement, assuring Lloyd that “someday we’ll get our break too; we just have to keep our eyes open.”
