Plot Summary

In a world where monotony seems to suffocate individuality, Susan (who prefers to be known as Rita) - a 26-year-old hairdresser with a rebellious spirit - feels trapped in a cycle of predictability. She’s hesitant to settle into motherhood, fearing it will forever anchor her to the humdrum routine she’s desperate to escape. Instead, she yearns for something more profound, though the precise nature of that something remains shrouded in uncertainty. Seeking intellectual growth and liberation, Susan enrolls in an Open University course on Literature.

Her assigned tutor, Frank Bryant (a jaded soul with a penchant for self-deprecation), has long since surrendered to the allure of his bottle, viewing himself as “an appalling teacher.” However, Rita’s unbridled enthusiasm and technical aptitude, despite her limited educational background, rekindle Frank’s passion for literature. Initially skeptical about Rita’s ability to navigate the academic realm, Frank is eventually won over by her infectious energy and genuine commitment, prompting him to re-evaluate his own perspective on life. As Susan finds herself drawn into Frank’s world, she discovers a newfound self-assurance and an intoxicating sense of belonging to a bohemian lifestyle.

But as Susan becomes increasingly adept at navigating the university culture, Frank’s cynicism and bitterness return with a vengeance. He’s dismayed by her growing adoption of the very pretensions he’d initially despised. Meanwhile, Susan is jolted into disillusionment when a close friend attempts suicide, forcing her to confront the superficiality and dishonesty that pervades the social circles she’s grown to love. As the film draws to a close, Frank departs for Australia on a sabbatical, embracing the possibilities of change as he leaves behind the trappings of his former life.
