Plot Summary

In the unassuming mining town of Prosperity, Arizona, an unlikely catalyst sets off a chain reaction that would forever alter the lives of its residents. A chance encounter between a wayward rabbit and a toxic waste barrel, abandoned in a reservoir, sets the stage for a sinister sequence of events. Joshua (Tom Noonan), a quiet and enigmatic exotic spider farmer, has been frequenting the site, collecting crickets to nourish his vast array of arachnid companions. Among his prized possessions are Jumping spiders, Trapdoor spiders, Tarantulas, and orb-weavers, including the majestic female orb-weaver Consuela. As Mike (Scott Terra), a curious local boy, gazes upon Joshua’s impressive collection, little does he know that their encounter will have far-reaching consequences.

Joshua’s seemingly harmless fascination with his eight-legged friends is soon revealed as a harbinger of doom when an escaped tarantula bites him and he inadvertently upsets the spider cages. The spiders, now free to roam, exact a gruesome revenge on Joshua, consuming his body and, in the process, absorbing the toxic waste. As they grow to unprecedented sizes, the once-docile arachnids become the stuff of local legend.

Meanwhile, Sheriff Samantha ‘Sam’ Parker (Kari Wührer) and her deputy are busy containing the environmental fallout from the toxic spill. The town’s residents, led by Mayor Wade, are divided on whether to sell the mines and relocate in the face of this new threat. Chris McCormick (David Arquette), a passionate advocate for preserving the mining industry, finds himself at odds with Wade’s proposal.

As tensions simmer beneath the surface, Harlan Griffiths (Doug E. Doug), the town’s eccentric radio DJ and aficionado of extraterrestrial life, spins a far-fetched yarn about the disappearance of various pets in town being attributed to alien abductions. While his theory is met with ridicule, Mike begins to sense that something sinister lurks beneath the surface. His discovery of Joshua’s gruesome fate and the massive spider leg at the mine entrance only serves to fuel his growing unease.

As the townspeople remain oblivious to the horrors unfolding around them, Chris dismisses Mike’s warnings as mere fantasy. The mines reopen, and the miners embark on a quest for a legendary gold lode, unaware that they are being stalked by the very creatures they have been searching for.

As the dark and foreboding veins of the mine begin to seep into the very fabric of town life, the consequences of one miner’s gruesome demise at the hands of a gargantuan spider become all too real. The usually tranquil air vents above the dusty streets now harbor stealthy threats, as Deputy Pete Williams (Rick Overton) finds himself engaged in a desperate aerial battle with a snarling arachnid foe before ultimately succumbing to its deadly embrace.

The ripple effect of this terror spreads far and wide, leaving no corner of the community untouched. Wade’s farm is ravaged by marauding Trap Door Spiders, their sinister presence striking fear into the hearts of even the most stalwart ostriches. Meanwhile, romance turns to despair as Ashley breaks free from her relationship with Bret, only to see him and his motorbike-riding friends pursued by a swarm of jumping spiders - a nightmare that culminates in Bret’s solitary survival, his desperate attempts to reconnect with the outside world foiled by the severed telephone line.

As the townsfolk struggle to comprehend the full extent of this arachnid onslaught, Chris is shaken to discover that his Aunt Gladys and her loyal canine companion have been spirited away by a cunning male orb-weaver in their own basement. His skepticism-mired friend Sam is initially dismissive of Chris’s warnings, but her doubts are soon shattered when she bears witness to the attempted abduction of Ashley (Scarlett Johansson) - her rebellious teenage daughter - and Chris himself by a behemoth male orb-weaver.

As the townspeople begin to realize that they are not alone in this desperate struggle against an invasion of gargantuan proportions, Sam finds herself compelled to take action, saving both her daughter and Chris from the clutches of the monstrous Consuela. But for Bret, still wandering the treacherous tunnels, a fleeting glimpse of this colossal spider during its feeding frenzy serves only as a grim reminder that the horrors of the mine are far from contained.

As chaos erupts, Sam sends out a desperate call to arms, instructing Pete to gather all available firepower from the police station and make a break for Harlan’s makeshift radio haven - a converted trailer that serves as a beacon of hope in the face of impending doom. With the spiders closing in, they escape into the trailer, where Harlan’s broadcasting equipment becomes the key to rallying the town against the encroaching horde. But just as Sam begins to spread the alarm through the airwaves, the “tank” of the tarantula army descends upon them, its imposing presence threatening to crush their fragile defenses. A narrow escape later, they find themselves fleeing from Harlan’s trailer, pursued by a relentless tide of arachnid terror that leaves a trail of death and destruction in its wake.

As the town teeters on the brink of collapse, Chris attempts to reason with Harlan about the true nature of their eight-legged foes. Initially convinced that these spiders are mere Earthbound creatures gone awry, he later concedes to Harlan’s insistence that they hail from the red planet, Mars - a notion that brings the pair fleeting solace in their darkest hour. With the situation spiraling out of control, Sam urges everyone to evacuate to the local mall, a last-ditch stronghold where they might hope to weather the coming storm.

A desperate horde of spiders pours into the abandoned streets, leaving naught but death and despair in its wake as Chris, Sam, Mike, Ashley, Harlan, Wade, and countless other townsfolk flee for their lives. The once-quaint mall becomes a fortress against the invaders, its walls barricaded by brave survivors who cling to hope like a lifeline. Meanwhile, Harlan and Chris scale the radio mast on the mall’s rooftop, striving to broadcast their dire plight to the outside world - only to be dismissed as pranksters by a skeptical US army.

As panic sets in, the tarantula army breaches the mall’s defenses, sending the defenders scrambling for cover. In the chaos that ensues, Harlan makes a daring leap from the roof, landing with a thud in some nearby bushes where he reunites with Pete - his trusted ally and confidant. Down below, Chris rallies the remaining townsfolk in the basement, even as Bret - another lone survivor - stumbles upon Wade’s abandoned mine shaft, only to discover the cowering fugitive already in the clutches of their eight-legged tormentors.

As the townspeople huddle together in the basement, an unexpected arrival signals the beginning of a daring rescue mission. Bret (actor name) materializes on a forklift, effortlessly dismantling the locked gate and clearing the path to the mines’ front entrance. The group cautiously ventures into the labyrinthine tunnels, only to discover they are filled with noxious methane gas. In the chaos that ensues, Chris becomes separated from Norman and Wade, but he manages to free his friend and continue the search for Aunt Gladys. His quest ultimately leads him to uncover the long-sought-after gold, but not before facing off against the formidable Consuela, a gargantuan spider.

With cunning and resourcefulness, Chris outwits the beast using perfume as a diversion, then makes a daring escape on Bret’s motorcycle. Undeterred by his close call, Chris seizes the opportunity to turn the tables on the spider infestation. By exploiting the mines’ methane-filled atmosphere and Gladys’s unique smoking habit, he orchestrates a devastating attack that clears the tunnels of their eight-legged inhabitants.

As order is restored, the police finally arrive, having initially dismissed reports of the spiders as mere fantasy. However, Pete sets the record straight, revealing the true nature of the assailants: ordinary spiders that had inadvertently consumed toxic waste in massive quantities. In a striking display of evidence, he proudly displays his own baldness, attributing it to an “all new growth” phenomenon.

The film concludes with Harlan broadcasting a radio report about the incident. Though the town has chosen to suppress the truth, they have allowed Harlan to share his account, knowing that few will give credence to his words. As he speaks, Chris is shown reactivating the gold mines and revitalizing the local economy, but Harlan hints that this is merely the beginning of a larger story. As the camera zooms in on his mouth, it becomes clear that Harlan has acquired three gleaming gold teeth, a tangible symbol of his unwavering commitment to exposing the truth.
