Plot Summary

As the cinematic equivalent of a gripping historical novel, FAREWELL unfolds as an espionage thriller with roots in a remarkable true tale. Against the backdrop of 1981, Colonel Grigoriev (Kusturica), a disillusioned KGB operative, embarks on a quest to reshape the world according to his own ideals. Through clandestine channels, he forms a connection with Pierre (Canet), a French engineer based in Moscow, and begins to share sensitive documents detailing revelations that would expose the most significant Soviet Cold War espionage operation in recorded history.

These confidential files, passed along by Grigoriev under the codename Farewell, are personally scrutinized by French President Francois Mitterrand and US President Ronald Reagan over a period of two years. The contents of these documents hold the power to alter the course of events, ultimately sounding the death knell for the Soviet Union before the end of the decade.

As Grigoriev’s actions come to fruition, Farewell unwittingly plays a pivotal role in shaping global politics. In this dramatization, which omits certain aspects of the real-life Grigoriev’s troubled past, he eschews conventional espionage tactics and forgoes financial compensation, driven solely by his desire to forge a new destiny for his fellow Russians – and particularly for his son.

With Farewell’s quiet determination, the very fabric of international relations begins to unravel, paving the way for a brighter future. As this gripping narrative unfolds, we are invited to bear witness to the extraordinary tale of an ordinary man who dared to challenge the status quo, forever changing the world in the process.
