Synopsis
Inspired by true events, The Last Color follows the journey of nine-year-old Chhoti, a bold tightrope walker and flower seller, who dreams of saving Rs. 300 (around $4) to attend school. The narrative intricately weaves through her and her best friend Chintu’s daily struggles for survival amidst the bustling streets of the historical city of Banaras, India.
In this vibrant tale, Chhoti forms a bond with Noor, a widow dressed in white, who lives a life of total renunciation and is barred from participating in any festivities, particularly during Holi, the renowned Indian festival of colors. Through their relationship, Chhoti and Noor transcend societal barriers imposed by the caste system, as their friendship blossoms into a spiritual connection that uplifts them both.
Noor serves as a source of inspiration for the courageous young girl, urging her to confront life’s challenges with tenacity, education, and dignity. She shares her cherished, yet hidden childhood memories of joyous moments spent playing with colors. In a heartfelt promise, Chhoti vows to splash Noor with her beloved pink color during this year’s Holi celebration. However, tragedy strikes on the eve of the festival when Noor unexpectedly passes away, and in a sweeping raid by the corrupt police led by the cruel Raja, Chhoti is imprisoned. The key question remains: Will Chhoti fulfill her promise amidst such adversity?
Fast forward twenty-four years, and Chhoti has transformed into an advocate, tirelessly fighting for societal reforms aimed at rehabilitating street children and widows. The Last Color is a poignant tale of kept and broken promises, a friendship that transcends limits, and the ultimate freedom and triumph of the human spirit.
This compelling narrative is inspired by a significant moment in history when the widows of Vrindavan and Banaras celebrated Holi for the very first time, shattering a centuries-old taboo. On that momentous occasion, color transformed into a symbol of rebirth and liberation, becoming the foundation for both the book and this cinematic masterpiece.
