Plot Summary

Kyle Livingston (Josh Cooke), a self-absorbed and slightly bitter individual in his mid-30s, finds himself stuck in a rut, longing for the creative spark that once fueled his first novel. His mundane existence takes a drastic turn as he’s forced to return home to his eccentric family, tail between his legs, only to discover that his estranged father, Alan (Barry Bostwick), has transformed his childhood bedroom into a tacky bathroom, sparking Kyle’s rage against the world.

As he navigates the chaos of his family life, which includes his older brother Marshall (Tyler Bunch), a goofy telemarketer with a hidden secret, his high-strung sister-in-law Patsy (Kiki Harris), and their daughter Mel (Arielle Hoffman), a wise and sensitive teenager often overlooked. Then there’s Gloria (Lainie Kazan), Alan’s exuberant and nurturing live-in companion.

However, life at home begins to show signs of improvement when Kyle meets Joy Bailey (Liane Balaban), the spunky and vivacious girl across the street. Her offbeat charm and infectious enthusiasm inspire Kyle to help her make a positive impact on the world, reigniting his passion for writing and making him feel alive again.

But as Kyle spends more time with Joy, he becomes increasingly skeptical of her claim that she’s dying soon. Despite her insistence, he finds himself falling deeper in love with her, and together they form an unlikely bond. With the help of his quirky family, Kyle sets out to convince Joy that she has many good years left ahead of her and should spend them exploring life with him.

As fate continues to unfold, Kyle must confront the reality of Joy’s situation and decide whether to embrace their unconventional love or risk everything for a chance at happiness.
