The film begins with a serene moment in the lives of Andy McGee and his partner Vicky McGee, as they lovingly watch over their infant daughter, Charlie. However, their peace is shattered when the mobile above Charlie’s crib and nearby objects spontaneously ignite. In a frantic attempt to protect her from the flames, Andy scoops up Charlie, only for the unthinkable to occur—she catches fire as well.

Jumping to the present, we witness Andy trying to comfort a terrified Charlie after she wakes from a nightmare. She reveals her overwhelming dread of “the bad thing”: her unique ability to manipulate fire. As Andy lovingly reassures her, Vicky enters, bringing with her a sense of normalcy with breakfast, yet their family is still haunted by their past.

The opening credits piece together Andy and Vicky’s backstory as a young couple involved in controversial clinical trials overseen by Dr. Joseph Wanless. The experimental drug, Lot-6, was meant to be groundbreaking but left Andy with the harrowing ability to control others’ thoughts—a skill he refers to as “the push.” This power comes at a grave cost, leaving him with painful manifestations that mar his features.

Charlie’s life is no less complicated; at school, she grapples with mean-spirited classmates led by the arrogant Gavin. The compassionate Ms. Gardner attempts to mediate the situation, offering support as Charlie navigates her insecurities. When Vicky returns home to find Charlie upset, both parents reassure her that her uniqueness is a special gift, prompting the family to confront their new reality together.

The following day, during gym class, Charlie’s frustrations bubble over, leading to a dodgeball incident that sends her into the bathroom in tears. In an explosive moment of emotion, her powers manifest once more, causing the bathroom door to fly off its hinges. This event only deepens the rift between Andy and Vicky on how to guide Charlie, culminating in a heart-wrenching confrontation that leaves Charlie feeling isolated and disheartened.

Meanwhile, Captain Hollister monitors Charlie’s developing abilities following the chaos from school, sending Rainbird, a formidable figure with his own supernatural capabilities, to recover Charlie. As the tension rises, Andy attempts to lift Charlie’s spirits with a trip for ice cream, oblivious to the looming danger.

While Andy and Charlie are out, Rainbird confronts Vicky in a cruel twist, demanding details about Charlie’s location. In a tragic outcome, his ruthlessness leads to Vicky’s death, altering the course of Andy and Charlie’s lives forever. Returning home with ice cream in hand, they discover the devastating truth, leading to a frantic escape from Rainbird’s clutches.

In the days that follow, Hollister updates Wanless on the perilous situation concerning Charlie, who is struggling to control her fiery powers, which she accidentally turns against a stray cat in a tragic incident. Feeling guilty, Andy and Charlie bury the cat, creating a memorial as they mourn Vicky.

As they seek sanctuary with Irv Manders, a kindly stranger, Andy utilizes his abilities to ensure their safety. Within Irv’s home, Charlie forms a telepathic bond with Irv’s ailing wife, Essi. However, when Irv learns the troubling truth about Andy, he initially reacts with anger but is moved by Charlie’s understanding, ultimately deciding to help them evade the police.

Rainbird’s pursuit intensifies as he takes down law enforcement with brutal efficiency. In a tense chase through the woods, Andy employs his wit to outsmart Rainbird, momentarily allowing Charlie to escape. As the confrontation escalates, Andy resists giving up Charlie’s location, even as Hollister attempts to leverage Rainbird’s grudge against the facility that once exploited him.

Meanwhile, Charlie’s burgeoning powers lead her to manipulate a group of bullies to steal their possessions, demonstrating her growth and control. Yet when a Hollister agent attempts to eliminate her, she retaliates, showcasing her ability to defend herself.

Finally infiltrating the facility, Charlie discovers her father is imprisoned by Hollister. In a desperate bid to save him, she confronts her fears and unleashes her fury, incinerating Hollister and burning much of the facility in a fierce display of her powers.

In the aftermath, Rainbird shows an unexpected gentleness, cradling Charlie and leading her away into the darkness, forging an alliance born from their shared experiences of manipulation and suffering.
