In 1966, in the heart of Southern California, a young boy named Richard Montañez begins his journey amidst a backdrop of hard work, a stern father, and a supportive grandfather. While in school, he crosses paths with his future wife, Judy Montañez, and starts his entrepreneurial spirit by selling burritos to his classmates. However, his childhood dreams hit a snag when he faces arrest due to skepticism surrounding his burrito business.
As years pass, Richard and Judy find themselves entangled in a life of crime, turning to drugs for survival. Everything changes when they learn they are expecting their first child, prompting them to seek a better path. With the birth of their second child, financial struggles become more pronounced, pushing Richard to reconnect with an old friend, Tony Romero, who helps him land a job at Frito-Lay.
Despite embellishing his resume, Richard catches the attention of Lonny Mason, the floor head, and is hired. With curiosity and determination, Richard becomes fascinated with the workings of the factory and seeks guidance from Clarence C. Baker, played by Dennis Haysbert. Baker, initially hesitant, eventually teaches Richard everything he needs to know about operating the machinery.
As the landscape shifts under the Reagan administration, job security diminishes, and Frito-Lay’s profits plummet, resulting in layoffs. In a moment of inspiration, Richard sees a motivating video from Roger Enrico, the Frito-Lay CEO, leading him to adopt a CEO mindset. After a trip to pick up his children, he discovers his youngest son, Steven, loves the spicy flavors of elotes, igniting an idea to target the Latino market to revive Frito-Lay.
Richard proposes the idea to Baker and his colleagues, but initially, he faces opposition from his father, Vacho (played by Emilio Rivera). Nonetheless, with his wife Judy’s unwavering support, they work obsessively to create the ultimate spicy flavor for Cheetos. Despite setbacks, Richard manages to reach out to Enrico after a daring move to sneak into the factory for his phone number. Intrigued by Richard’s passion, Enrico asks for a sample of the flavored Cheetos, and once he tries them, he is sold on the concept, quickly setting up a meeting.
Richard pours his heart into his presentation, ultimately securing approval for production of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. However, when the new flavor struggles to catch on due to lack of advertising, Richard’s children remind him to think outside the box. He rallies the team to sell from the streets, transforming their approach and creating a buzz that leads to a substantial order from Enrico.
As recognition surrounds Richard, Baker receives the promotion he long desired, while Richard remains a janitor, earning the respect and support of his colleague. In an unexpected twist, Richard encounters Enrico, who empathizes with his past struggles, announcing his promotion to head of international marketing. This culminates into an emotional moment as Richard celebrates his success with Judy, who remains his steadfast partner.
The closing titles reveal the favorable outcome of Richard’s career, marking 45 years of loyalty to the company and enduring love for Judy, solidifying their legacy together.
