What internal struggle does Sasha face as a vampire?
As a descendant of a long lineage of vampires, Sasha faces a profound existential dilemma regarding the ethics of consuming human blood. Her internal conflict is deeply intertwined with childhood trauma, primarily born from a traumatic birthday party incident involving her Aunt Victorine, whose ill-fated decision to devour a clown left a lasting scar on Sasha’s psyche. Haunted by this memory, Sasha seeks refuge in playing the piano outside a convenience store, earning meager scraps of money. Yet, her parents, Steve Laplante and Sophie Cadieux, are growing increasingly impatient, threatening to cut off her blood supply unless she learns to hunt for her own prey.
In a bid to set Sasha on the right path, her parents send her to live with her older cousin Denise, who attempts to impart the necessary skills for hunting. However, when Denise’s plan to lure an unsuspecting individual, J.P., into their grasp falters due to Sasha’s reluctance to take a life, it results in Denise having to act decisively. This moment of betrayal leaves Sasha feeling lost and unsupported, prompting her to escape into the night, where she stumbles upon a quirky support group for those grappling with depression and suicidal thoughts.
Within this peculiar circle, she encounters Paul, a melancholic spirit who has already attempted to end his life in despair. Their connection deepens as they share their struggles, and Sasha reveals her vampiric troubles. Moved by a profound sense of selflessness, Paul offers to sacrifice himself to help her. Yet, as Denise’s attempts to guide Sasha falter, with her fangs refusing to descend, Sasha finds herself seeking alternative forms of solace from Paul.
Paul proposes a plan for revenge against his school bully, Henry, but as the situation escalates, Sasha witnesses an extraordinary transformation in him. Initially focused on retribution, Paul redirects his anger towards those who have harmed him – including a popular girl and a dismissive gym teacher. This shift in perspective strikes a chord with Sasha, who begins to see that life’s essence might extend beyond simply embracing darkness.
As their paths begin to diverge, Paul stops at his childhood home to write a heartfelt farewell letter to his mother. Unbeknownst to him, she arrives home early, instigating a candid conversation about his plans. At the party later that evening, tensions escalate when Henry provokes Paul; however, in a moment of bravery bolstered by Sasha’s presence, he retaliates. A primal instinct awakens in Paul as he bites Henry’s arm, while Sasha, confronting her own dire circumstances, receives his blood in a desperate bid for survival.
The onlookers, sensing the unexpected shift in the atmosphere, converge on the pair, mercilessly assaulting Paul. In a striking moment of empowerment, Sasha transforms, launching a fierce attack that overwhelms Henry and his friends. With a warning for Paul to escape, she disappears into the shadows, leaving a whirlwind of chaos in her wake.
When Denise arrives at the aftermath, seething with anger and curiosity about Sasha’s involvement, it leads to a hostile confrontation. However, Sasha swiftly retaliates against her cousin, leaving Denise incapacitated. As Paul and Sasha retreat to safety, they face a defining choice regarding their futures.
Yearning to assist Sasha, Paul considers becoming a vampire himself, but she hesitates, yet ultimately resolves to undergo the transformation. Their shared journey continues as they seek out an elderly patient in the hospital where Paul’s mother works. There, Sasha plays an ethereal melody on the piano while Paul, with the patient’s consent, extracts blood into a waiting bag, marking another significant milestone in their collective narrative.
