What is the name of the horse that Tito and Ossie are obsessed with?
Into the West tells the captivating tale of two young brothers, Tito (Rúaidhrí Conroy) and Ossie (Ciarán Fitzgerald), whose lives drastically change after the loss of their mother, Mary, during Ossie’s birth. Their father, “Papa” Reilly (Gabriel Byrne), once celebrated as the “King of Irish Travellers,” struggles to keep his family afloat in a somber tower block in Ballymun, Dublin, where they’ve settled.
The boys find solace in their grandfather, David Kelly, an elderly storyteller from the Traveller community, who shares enchanting Irish folk-tales that spark their imaginations. Their mundane existence is thrown into a whirlwind of excitement when a majestic white horse named Tír na nÓg—meaning “Land of Eternal Youth” in Irish—magically appears from the sea. This breathtaking horse ignites a sense of wonder in Tito and Ossie, who dream of escaping into the realm of cowboys.
Tragedy strikes when corrupt Gardai steal Tír na nÓg and sell him as a racehorse. Catching a glimpse of their beloved horse on television fuels the brothers’ determination to reclaim him. They embark on an exhilarating adventure, defying the confines of their impoverished council estate as they ride “Into the West.” Their father’s troubles escalate as he faces arrest and brutal treatment from the corrupt authorities, but with the assistance of a caring friend, Kathleen, he vows to reunite with his sons.
While the boys adopt traditional Traveller methods for survival, their journey is fraught with danger, as the Gardai use helicopters and dogs to track them down. However, Tír na nÓg seems to possess a supernatural ability to evade capture. Along the way, the horse guides them to their mother’s grave, where Ossie discovers the truth about her death.
As the net tightens around them, the brothers find themselves cornered at the beach, where they are joyfully reunited with Papa Reilly, Kathleen, and the Barrel maker. The Gardai catch up with Papa Reilly and the Barrel maker, but in a breathtaking turn, Tír na nÓg charges into the sea with Ossie riding on his back. In a heart-pounding moment, Papa Reilly dives in after them, only to pull a lifeless Ossie from the water. After administering CPR, hope returns as Ossie revives.
With the superintendent eventually calling off the search, Papa Reilly finds closure by setting his Barrel Wagon ablaze, allowing his wife’s memory to peacefully fade. The brothers watch the flames dance, and in an otherworldly vision, they see Tír na nÓg re-emerge, bringing smiles to their faces as they embrace their newfound freedom and adventure.
