As the sun-kissed streets of 1968 Southern California were abuzz with the counterculture's rebellious spirit, Pastor Chuck Smith's staid yet revered ministry found itself struggling to connect with the free-spirited hippie generation. It was amidst this cultural divide that Smith's daughter, Janette, unwittingly became a catalyst for change by offering a ride to an enigmatic hitchhiker named Lonnie Frisbee, who professed a passion for sharing the Ministry of Jesus. Initially wary, Smith's skepticism slowly gave way to curiosity as Frisbee introduced him to the infectious energy of Love Song, a band whose impromptu performance in his living room left an indelible mark on the pastor's heart.

With Frisbee at the helm, Smith's ministry became a beacon for hippies and outcasts alike, drawing them into a world where the message of Jesus Christ was not only relevant but revolutionary. Meanwhile, high school student Greg Laurie was navigating his own journey of self-discovery, having fled his Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps class to join Cathe, a free-spirited young woman who introduced him to the liberating power of music and the counterculture's revered prophet, Timothy Leary.

However, as Laurie delved deeper into this world of rebellion and excess, he began to see the dangers lurking beneath the surface. A friend's tragic overdose served as a sobering reminder of the devastating consequences that could arise from unchecked hedonism. As Cathe's anger towards Laurie for his naivety boiled over, their friendship was left in tatters.

The catalyst for their reconciliation lay in the charismatic preaching of Lonnie Frisbee, whose ministry had become a haven for disillusioned hippies seeking genuine connection and spiritual fulfillment. It was here that Laurie found solace, as did Cathe, who had discovered a new sense of purpose within the Jesus movement. As the Jesus movement continued to grow, Lonnie Frisbee eventually parted ways with Chuck Smith, his disagreements with the pastor ultimately leading him to relocate to Florida. In his absence, Greg Laurie emerged as a natural leader, offering to spearhead a new ministry branch in Riverside and ultimately marrying Cathe. As he rose through the ranks, Laurie's reputation as a charismatic pastor spread far and wide.
