Plot Summary

Lanie Kerrigan, a journalist with a sharp reporting edge for Seattle’s television scene, embarks on an extraordinary encounter with self-proclaimed prophet Jack. As she delves into the mysteries of his supposed predictive abilities, Jack not only prophesizes the outcome of a forthcoming football game but also foretells a hailstorm set to ravage the skies on the next Thursday – and, most chillingly, her own demise just seven days hence. When Jack’s initial predictions come to pass with eerie precision, Lanie is catapulted into a state of panic and desperation.

As she frantically seeks reassurance from loved ones, including her high-profile baseball player beau Cal Cooper (his name etched on her psyche like a badge of pride), and her family, the cracks in her carefully constructed life begin to show. Her long-held ambition of gracing network television’s airwaves starts to recede into the distant horizon, replaced by an overwhelming sense of mortality.

In her desperation, Lanie commits professional faux pas, but it is through an unexpected source – her arch-nemesis, cameraman Pete Scanlon, with whom she once shared a fleeting yet intense physical connection – that she discovers a new lease on life. Pete introduces her to a world where every moment is savored and opportunities seized; he shares his own son Tommy’s company, and they spend an idyllic day together, forging bonds and memories.

As the days tick by, Lanie finds herself drawn back into Pete’s orbit, their relationship blossoming like a once-dormant garden. However, just as she is poised to embark on her dream job in New York, Pete warns her that her insatiable appetite for success and fame will forever elude her. With heavy heart, Lanie departs for the East Coast.

Meanwhile, back in Seattle, Pete crosses paths with Jack once more, eager to set the record straight regarding Lanie’s fortunes – only to be met with an enigmatic prophecy foretelling the untimely demise of a legendary former baseball player in a plane crash. As news of the tragedy breaks, Pete is compelled to reach out to Lanie, but his efforts are foiled by the distance between them. Undeterred, he makes the arduous journey to New York, driven by an urgent desire to warn her of impending doom.

As Lanie’s conversation with Deborah Connors (character) unfolds on air, she begins to see the trivial nature of her early questions and opens up in a poignant moment of shared vulnerability. The broadcast becomes an instant ratings sensation, prompting the network to extend an offer that Lanie ultimately declines, recognizing her true desire for a life alongside Pete in Seattle.

Outside the studio, a chance encounter between a police officer and a man escalates into chaos, with the latter firing a bullet into the air. From across the street, Pete frantically tries to warn Lanie of impending danger, but she becomes caught in the crossfire. Despite medical efforts, Lanie’s life appears to slip away in the operating room. Yet, against all odds, she is revived.

As Lanie regains consciousness, Pete reveals his long-held secret: he has been smitten with her since their first encounter. With her heart now fully awakened, Lanie confesses her own love for him. Later, as they watch Cal’s baseball game alongside Tommy, Lanie’s voiceover whispers a profound truth to herself - one part of her, the part that never knew how to live life, has indeed passed away, making way for a newfound appreciation for every moment she shares with those around her.
