Plot Summary

As Ida (Trine Dyrholm) returns home from her breast cancer treatment and mastectomy, she’s met with a harsh reality: her husband Leif has been unfaithful, entangled in an affair with their accountant Tilde. Meanwhile, across the city, Philip (Pierce Brosnan), a successful fruit and vegetable exporter, is grappling with his own demons after the loss of his wife.

The stage is set for a tumultuous encounter when Ida’s daughter Astrid and Philip’s son Patrick embark on a journey to Italy, where they’re tasked with preparing their families’ villa for their wedding - a mere three months after they met. As Ida struggles to come to terms with her husband’s betrayal, she finds herself at the Copenhagen airport, about to embark on the long flight to Italy alone.

However, fate intervenes as her car collides with Philip’s, prompting him to shout at her for reckless driving. It soon becomes apparent that they’re connected - Ida is Astrid’s mother, and Philip sees this chance encounter as a turning point in his journey towards healing. Despite initial reservations, the two travelers find themselves bound together by circumstance, heading to Italy together.

The drama unfolds as Leif arrives at the villa with his new girlfriend Tilde, only to reveal she’s his fiancée - a bombshell that leaves everyone stunned. Ida, still reeling from her husband’s infidelity, takes a solo swim in the cove near the house. Unbeknownst to her, Philip witnesses this intimate moment and rushes to intervene, cautioning her about the treacherous currents.

As they take a stroll through the estate’s groves of citrus trees, Philip begins to open up to Ida, sharing the poignant story of his wife’s passing. His guard slowly drops as he becomes drawn to Ida’s radiant warmth and sunny disposition. He rebuffs the advances of Benedikte, his sister-in-law, and instead finds himself dancing with Ida at a pre-wedding celebration.

However, their moment is short-lived, interrupted by Leif’s arrival and subsequent mistreatment of Ida. Philip’s son Patrick rushes to her defense, punching Leif in a show of solidarity. In the aftermath, Philip turns to Ida, acknowledging her beauty and wonder - only for them to be interrupted once more by Benedikte.

As the wedding celebrations unfold, Patrick discovers Astrid’s provocative behavior with Alessandro, a hired hand at the villa. His attempt to apologize to Alessandro leads to an unexpected kiss, setting off a chain of events that will test the boundaries of love, family, and redemption.

As the morning of Patrick’s non-existent wedding unfolds, a sense of unease settles over the gathering. It is here that Philip discovers Patrick’s sudden disappearance, only to find him confessing his true feelings - a reluctance to tie the knot and a desire to conform to societal expectations rather than genuine affection. In a shocking turn of events, Patrick and Astrid reveal to their guests that they will not be exchanging vows after all. As the news spreads, Ida arrives on the scene, seeking solace in her friend Astrid’s company, while Philip offers comfort to Patrick, whose resolve has finally been broken. Amidst the chaos, Philip is granted a brief moment of intimacy with Ida before she departs, but the weight of their words hangs heavy in the air.

Months later, as Ida returns to her Danish home, she finds herself enveloped by a sea of roses - a poignant reminder of the fragility and beauty of life. Leif’s presence is soon revealed, his words dripping with regret as he apologizes for abandoning Ida for Tilde. Meanwhile, Philip finds himself trapped in a life devoid of purpose or passion, his soul craving a sense of fulfillment. It is here that he seeks out Ida at her salon, sharing the news that he plans to scale back his workload and relocate to Italy. He invites Ida to join him on this new chapter, but she remains hesitant, her heart still tied to Leif.

As Ida’s emotions begin to stir, she finds herself liberated from the shackles of her past, leaving behind the wig and embracing her natural beauty as her hair grows back with the passing days. Philip, too, has found solace in his new surroundings, immersing himself in the tranquility of his lemon orchard estate. It is against this serene backdrop that Ida arrives, bearing news from the hospital - a report on her latest test results. As she prepares to share the information with Philip, their mutual longing culminates in a tender kiss. And as they sit together, the weight of their words and emotions slowly begins to lift, replaced by a sense of hope and possibility.
