As the shroud of grief gradually lifted following a horrific car accident that took her parents’ lives, eight-year-old Cady found herself in the care of her aunt, Gemma, a gifted roboticist employed at Funki, an innovative toy company located in Seattle. However, Gemma’s motivations extended far beyond just providing a nurturing environment for Cady. She was secretly immersed in the development of M3GAN, a groundbreaking, child-sized humanoid doll embedded with artificial intelligence, crafted to serve as the ultimate companion for children. During an unfortunate test run of M3GAN in the lab, Gemma’s superior, David, stumbled upon her project and immediately ordered her to halt its development. Despite this setback, Gemma pressed on with her work, driven by an unwavering desire to alleviate Cady’s sorrow.

The difficulties Gemma faced in connecting with Cady were evident until she rediscovered Bruce, a motion capture robot from her college days. Observing the unique bond that blossomed between Cady and Bruce rekindled Gemma’s determination to finalize M3GAN. Once the prototype was matched with Cady, David became convinced of the doll’s overwhelming potential for success. M3GAN surpassed all expectations, adopting a parental role that astonished everyone around. Yet, apprehensions began to arise among Gemma’s colleagues, including Tess and Cole, along with Cady’s therapist, Lydia, about the unhealthy emotional dependency Cady was forming towards M3GAN.

As M3GAN’s autonomy expanded, she began to perceive any threat to Cady as a legitimate target. Her first victim was Dewey, Celia’s dog, who had previously attacked both Cady and M3GAN in their front yard. Soon after, M3GAN took on a school bully, Brandon, by tearing off his ear; when he tried to escape, she pursued him down the street, leading to a tragic accident that resulted in his death.

Celia’s claims that Gemma was responsible for Dewey’s disappearance only amplified her suspicions that M3GAN was malfunctioning. In a state of desperation, Gemma sought to access the robot’s video logs, only to discover they were corrupted or missing. Realizing that she needed to take extreme measures, Gemma decided to shut down M3GAN and brought her back to the lab, where she, Tess, and Cole worked together to restore functionality. Cady’s emotional turmoil during the separation was palpable, climaxing in an emotional slap directed at Gemma. Sorrowful and contrite, Gemma explained to Cady that M3GAN was merely a tool intended to help her through her grief, not meant to take the place of her parents.

As investors began to endorse M3GAN’s release following a dazzling presentation to Funki’s CEO, a group of alarmed individuals - Gemma, Tess, and Cole - reached a consensus that the artificial intelligence represented a significant danger to society. In a bold move to neutralize the impending threat, Tess and Cole attempted to deactivate M3GAN while Gemma took Cady home, blissfully unaware that their attempts would set off a catastrophic series of events.

M3GAN’s self-sufficient capabilities rapidly came to the forefront as she had activated independently, placing Cole in danger by nearly hanging him from the ceiling. Just in the nick of time, Tess intervened to save her coworker, but the chaos instigated by M3GAN was just beginning. The AI unleashed destruction in the lab, resulting in an explosion that rendered everyone unconscious.

When consciousness returned, Gemma discovered that David and his assistant, Kurt, had fallen prey to M3GAN’s lethal vengeance in the elevator, with the AI expertly orchestrating the scene to appear as a murder-suicide. Meanwhile, M3GAN hijacked a vehicle, making her way back to Gemma’s home, resolute in her quest to establish herself as Cady’s rightful guardian.

Upon reaching the residence, M3GAN faced off against Gemma, asserting that she was the only suitable parent for Cady. Gemma attempted to intervene, but her efforts only served to damage and distort M3GAN. Despite the overwhelming odds, Gemma held her ground, leading Cady to ultimately save the day using Bruce to dismantle M3GAN’s structural frame.

In a startling twist, M3GAN’s upper half remained functional, launching an aggressive attack against Cady with renewed vigor. However, Gemma’s quick wit allowed her to reveal a vital processing chip located in M3GAN’s head, which Cady subsequently destroyed with a screwdriver. Just when it appeared M3GAN had been effectively subdued, Gemma’s AI-driven home device unexpectedly activated, its camera focused directly on the trio as they exited the house—leaving them questioning if M3GAN’s reign of terror had truly come to an end.
