Plot Summary

In the picturesque southern French town where he resides with his loving family - comprising a devoted wife and an inquisitive young son - Jean, a humble builder, finds solace in his daily routine and the simple joys of life. As fate would have it, when his better half is indisposed, he takes on the task of fetching their little one from school, only to cross paths with Véronique, the enigmatic class teacher who has been filling in for maternity leave. This cultured but reclusive woman, perpetually on the move, seems to be searching for a sense of belonging and connection in her transient life.

Their chance encounter leads Jean to repair Véronique’s broken window, and as they part ways, she requests his presence at her home, where she serenades him with her exquisite violin playing. The tender moment shared between them on the couch is short-lived, but it leaves a lasting impression. As Jean returns to his wife, he finds himself lost in thought, his mind consumed by the captivating and accessible Véronique.

Meanwhile, Véronique is drawn to the warm and uncomplicated masculinity of the builder, which resonates deeply with her own yearnings for human connection. Moved by the beauty of his request to perform at his father’s birthday celebration, she agrees to play a melancholic melody that echoes the longing in her heart. As the evening wears on, Jean invites her home, and they spend a night filled with passion and intimacy.

However, their whirlwind romance is short-lived, as Véronique departs town without warning, leaving Jean to grapple with the aftermath of their intense encounter. Undeterred, he decides to follow her taxi to the railway station, where she waits patiently on the platform, hoping against hope that he will appear. As the train disappears into the distance, Jean recovers from his emotional turmoil and returns home to his wife, leaving behind a trail of unanswered questions about the nature of their love and the uncertainty that lies ahead.
