In the midst of his once-vibrant life now reduced to a mere whisper, Will Traynor (character) is introduced to Louisa "Lou" Clark, a beacon of optimism hired to tend to his needs as a tetraplegic. His mother hopes that Lou's effervescent spirit will revive Will's depressed and cynical demeanor, which has been tempered by the harsh realities of his quadriplegic existence. Initially, Will remains aloof towards Lou, but beneath his tough exterior lies a cultured and worldly individual, vastly different from the simplicity of Lou's own life with her parents or boyfriend Patrick.

As Lou works tirelessly to win over Will, she discovers that he has all but given up on life, having resigned himself to an assisted suicide at Dignitas in Switzerland. This revelation sparks Lou into action, and she sets out to prove to Will that there is still beauty to be found in this world, worth fighting for. However, her efforts are met with resistance from Patrick, whose growing jealousy ultimately drives them apart.

As the days pass, Will's desire to reconnect with Alicia, his former love, becomes increasingly apparent. He asks Lou to accompany him to her wedding, and it is there that their blossoming feelings for each other become impossible to ignore. A luxurious getaway to Mauritius serves as the backdrop for a heart-to-heart conversation between the pair, during which Will confesses his intention to end his life, citing his desire for Lou to live a full life rather than be burdened by his own mortality.

Hurt and disillusioned, Lou quits her position as Will's caregiver and distances herself from him. Weeks later, at the prompting of her father, Lou finds herself sitting in Will's favorite Parisian café, where she discovers a letter left behind for her. In it, Will implores her to seize every opportunity, to live life to its fullest potential – a poignant reminder that even in death, his spirit lives on through the impact he had on those around him.
