Benjamin Franklin Gates, played by Nicolas Cage, is a passionate historian and amateur cryptologist, carrying the weight of being the youngest in a distinguished line of treasure hunters. Despite his father, Patrick Henry Gates, trying to steer him away from the family legacy after enduring over two decades of ridicule in search of national treasures, young Benjamin is spurred on by a clue from his grandfather, John Adams Gates, who whispered, “The secret lies with Charlotte,” back in 1974. This revelation sets him on a quest for the legendary national treasure purportedly hidden by the Founding Fathers and Freemasons during the American Revolutionary War, a treasure entrusted to his ancestry by Charles Carroll of Carrollton in 1832.

Fast forward to the present day, Benjamin teams up with his resourceful friend, Riley Poole, portrayed by Justin Bartha, as they embark on an expedition funded by the enigmatic Ian Howe. Their journey leads them to a colonial ship encased in Arctic ice, recognized as the Charlotte. Upon exploring the ship, they unearth a meerschaum pipe inscribed with a riddle from the Knights Templar, which Benjamin connects to an invisible map purportedly written by Timothy Matlack, hidden on the reverse side of the Declaration of Independence.

When Ian reveals his ruthless intent to obtain this treasure—up to and including stealing the Declaration itself—Ben valiantly confronts him. This confrontation ignites a fierce battle during which gunpowder is ignited, resulting in a catastrophic explosion. Though Benjamin and Riley narrowly escape by hiding within a concealed smuggler’s hold, their resolve to thwart Ian only intensifies upon their return to the United States.

As they try to alert various authorities—including the FBI and Dr. Abigail Chase from the National Archives, portrayed by Diane Kruger—they face disbelief and are dismissed, as the theft of the Declaration seems implausible to them. Undeterred, Ben and Riley hatch a daring plan to steal the Declaration during a grand gala just before Ian’s team arrives. Abigail soon becomes entangled in their escapade, driven by her suspicion of Ben’s intentions at the event.

After the theft, authorities trace Ben’s actions back to him, leading them to his father’s home, where surprises and shocks abound. Determined to decipher a cipher found on the Declaration with Abigail’s assistance, they uncover connections to the Silence Dogood letters penned by Benjamin Franklin—leading them to the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. After decoding the intricate messages, they pinpoint a location tied to the Liberty Bell and discover a unique pair of Franklin’s bifocals that unveil further clues.

Caught in a dire situation by Ian, who masquerades his intentions under a false pretense of a prisoner exchange, the stakes are raised as Ben must use the bifocals to guide Ian to the next location—the impressive Trinity Church in New York City. There, they venture deep beneath the church, navigating secret tunnels and overcoming collapsing shafts, revealing the intricate secrets buried within.

Devising a clever ruse, Ben tricks Ian into believing the treasure is at the Old North Church in Boston, while they secretly continue to search for a way out. As they access a hidden room, Patrick, Ben’s father, reconciles with his son’s aspirations, admitting he now believes in the treasure’s reality. Their gripping journey culminates when they finally discover the treasure trove Ben has desperately sought all his life, uncovering a passage leading back to the surface.

Returning to the church, Ben seeks aid from Agent Sadusky, who reveals his allegiance to the Freemasons. In a symbolic deal, Ben agrees to return the Declaration while ensuring Ian’s capture. By the film’s conclusion, Ian is apprehended by the FBI and faces a host of serious charges. The movie wraps up on a high note, with Ben choosing to accept a mere 1% finder’s fee from the government, yet still walking away with substantial wealth. Moreover, Ben embarks on a romantic venture with Abigail, while Riley treats himself with a flashy new Ferrari, marking a triumphant end to their epic adventure.
