What event triggers the crisis in Dave and Clarice's marriage?

Plot Summary

As the Johnsons’ union teeters on the brink of collapse, a series of events unfolds like the delicate petals of a flower, slowly revealing the hidden truths that have been festering beneath the surface. For Clarice, a fateful car crash marks the turning point, as her mother Mary swoops in to mediate the crisis. The obvious truth dawns on all parties: the wounded body is merely a symptom of a deeper malady. Clarice’s physical therapist, Julie, becomes the catalyst for change, as her gentle touch and compassionate ear stir Dave’s long-dormant desires for connection and intimacy.

As Dave forms an unlikely bond with Julie and her young son Bryson, he begins to crave the warmth and comfort that comes from being part of a loving family. But fate has other plans; Bryson’s tragic drowning plunges Dave into a sea of grief and regret. In the aftermath, Clarice’s withdrawal pushes them further apart, leaving only the faintest glimmer of hope for reconciliation.

It is in this dark hour that Julie reaches out to Dave, seeking solace in his presence as she mourns the loss of her dear son. As they stand together amidst the tears and sorrow, the boundaries between friendship and something more begin to blur. Yet, just as the spark of attraction threatens to ignite, Dave’s heart is torn asunder by the realization that his true longing lies not with Julie, but with Clarice.

The couple’s reunion is facilitated by a candid conversation, as Clarice reveals the reasons behind her mother’s interference in their marriage. The truth, once out in the open, brings them closer together, and Dave discovers that he is to become a father himself, as Clarice is pregnant.
