In the midst of a smoky pool hall, run by the enigmatic Nick, a world of high-stakes and calculated risks unfolds. Johnny, a prodigious player with an uncanny ability to sink shots, is mentored by Joe, a shrewd stakehorse who sees Johnny's potential as a means to line his own pockets. Unbeknownst to Johnny, Joe has been deliberately holding him back from realizing his true ambitions: competing in the prestigious professional pool tour. This stifling reality drives Johnny to rebel against Joe's manipulation, culminating in a daring move that leaves both their fortunes and relationships in tatters.

The aftermath of this confrontation sees Johnny severing ties with Joe and embarking on a journey of self-discovery. Heeding the words of his girlfriend Tara, he abandons the cutthroat world of pool hustling and takes up a "real" job in construction. However, the monotony of this new life soon takes its toll, leaving Johnny feeling unfulfilled and disconnected from his passion for the game.

As Johnny navigates this existential crisis, he finds solace in his relationship with his younger brother Danny, a budding musician who looks up to Johnny's exploits on the pool table. Though Johnny discourages Danny from following in his footsteps, the younger sibling is undeterred in his pursuit of a similar path.

When Mike, Tara's wealthy uncle, enters the picture, Johnny sees an opportunity to recast his fortunes. Together, they concoct a scheme to hustle some of Mike's business associates, including a high-ranking executive at Tara's employer. In a bold move, Johnny wagers not only his own reputation but also Tara's career advancement, staking her future on a single trick-shot bet. With the stakes this high, Johnny must rely on his cunning and skill to emerge victorious.

The outcome of this wager is far from certain, as Johnny risks everything to secure Tara's success. Though the road ahead may be fraught with uncertainty, one thing is clear: Johnny will stop at nothing to ensure that those he cares about reach their full potential.

The relentless pursuit of retribution by Joe (character) is fueled by his determination to exact vengeance for the brutal beating he suffered, and he finds a worthy ally in Brad (Rick Schroder), whose skill at hustling rivals that of Johnny. With an eye on exploiting Johnny's brother as a mark, Joe sets his sights on the unsuspecting target, unaware of the high-stakes game that is about to unfold. The ensuing match between Brad and Danny ends in a crushing defeat for Danny, who is forced to pay off a massive debt to Joe, leaving him helpless against the merciless hustler.

As Johnny discovers that his brother has been imprisoned for attempting to steal the money he owes, he realizes that Joe will stop at nothing to collect. The only way out of this dire situation is for Johnny to engage in an epic showdown with Brad, staking his own future and his brother's freedom on the outcome. This tense and thrilling contest pits two of the greatest hustlers against each other, with the stakes raised to a level that will have far-reaching consequences for all involved.

The pivotal moment arrives during a time-out, when Mike delivers a memorable monologue (in Walken's intense style), drawing parallels between Johnny and a slumbering lion whose time has come to rise up and assert its dominance. With this stirring oration, Mike raises the stakes to a level that will bankrupt Joe if Brad loses, setting the stage for a heart-stopping conclusion that will leave only one player standing victorious. The tension is palpable as the two opponents face off, their fates hanging precariously in the balance.

As Brad deliberates over the crucial final shot, Johnny seizes the opportunity to manipulate his opponent. With a sly grin, he pokes at Brad's confidence, claiming the shot is a layup and that he'd even shell out big bucks for the privilege of taking it himself. Recognizing a chance to squeeze more cash from Johnny, Joe jumps at the chance and convinces Brad to let his rival take aim. Johnny steps up, but instead of sinking the final ball, he deliberately leaves it untouched. With Brad poised to make the winning shot, Johnny intervenes, citing the precedent set by their earlier agreement: since he paid for the privilege of taking Brad's turn, it's now his own turn again. The room falls silent as Brad and Joe are left stunned by Johnny's cunning move. In a stunning display of skill, Johnny pockets the last ball, securing his victory through exploiting the hustling techniques taught to him by Joe. As tensions escalate, Joe is prepared to unleash violence once more, but Johnny anticipated this and has the same cohorts who roughed up Joe earlier drag him away. Meanwhile, Brad wisely stays out of it, instead offering Johnny some parting advice: he should consider taking his skills to the professional circuit. The camera pans out as Johnny beams with pride, now a pro playing on the big stage, leaving the fate of Danny's legal troubles hanging in limbo.
