Plot Summary

As panic sets in, Manni, the hapless bagman responsible for delivering 100,000 Deutschmarks, frantically dials his girlfriend Lola’s number. Desperate to rectify the situation, he reveals that he was en route to deposit the funds when the U-Bahn suddenly halted, leaving him with a daunting realization: the money bag had been left behind. A homeless individual had seemingly stumbled upon it as the train pulled away, leaving Manni with only minutes to spare before his boss Ronnie exacts a deadly vengeance. With time running out, Manni resorts to desperate measures, plotting to relieve a nearby supermarket of its contents to replace the missing funds.

Lola, however, is preoccupied with her own crisis, having just received an urgent call from Manni. As she hangs up and rushes down the staircase of her apartment building, she narrowly avoids colliding with a man accompanied by his canine companion. Her subsequent visit to her father’s bank office finds him engaged in a heated conversation with his mistress, who casually announces her pregnancy. Lola’s concern for Manni’s predicament quickly turns into an argument with her father as she learns that he is abandoning their mother and that she herself is not his biological daughter.

As Lola hurries to meet Manni, she arrives too late to prevent him from entering the supermarket armed with a firearm. Together, they successfully pilfer 100,000 marks, but their triumphant exit is short-lived, as they soon find themselves surrounded by police. In a desperate attempt to distract the authorities, Manni tosses the money bag into the air, inadvertently prompting a police officer to accidentally shoot Lola dead.

In an alternate scenario, events rewind to the moment Lola departs her apartment building. This time, the man with the dog deliberately intervenes, causing her to trip and arrive at the bank limping. Her father’s mistress seizes this opportunity to reveal that she is not actually carrying his child, sparking a furious response from Lola as she overhears the conversation. Seizing a security guard’s firearm, Lola takes her father hostage and makes off with 100,000 marks.

With the police mistakenly mistaking her for an innocent bystander, Lola is able to escape and rendezvous with Manni in time. However, her momentary distraction of a speeding ambulance proves fatal, as it collides with Manni, leaving him mortally wounded.

As events unfold anew, Lola makes a daring leap over the unsuspecting man and his canine companion, arriving at the bank with unprecedented haste. This time around, however, she fails to trigger the auto accident that had become a recurring feature of her earlier attempts. Instead, her father’s colleague materializes on the scene, whisking him away from the office before Lola can make her presence known. Dazed and aimless, she embarks on a meandering journey that ultimately leads her to a casino, where she impulsively parts with all her cash in exchange for a 100-mark chip.

With a sense of reckless abandon, Lola places a bet on the roulette table, wagering her solitary chip on the number 20. Miraculously, her gamble pays off, and she is rewarded with a staggering windfall of 3,500 additional marks, which she promptly adds to her original stake on the same number. Her elation is short-lived, however, as she lets out a blood-curdling scream when 20 comes up again. Emboldened by her good fortune, Lola departs the casino with a sack containing an astonishing 129,600 marks and makes haste for Manni’s designated meeting spot.

As fate would have it, Manni happens to spot the homeless individual from their earlier subway encounter pedaling away on a bicycle, his possession none other than Lola’s bounty. Seizing the opportunity, Manni commandeers the bag at gunpoint, exchanging his firearm in the process. Meanwhile, a flustered and perspiring Lola arrives on the scene just in time to bear witness to Manni’s clandestine transfer of funds to Ronnie. As the pair saunter off together, Manni nonchalantly inquires about Lola’s missing bag, a query that only serves to further heighten the tension between them.
