What is the primary role of Griffin in the movie?
With the help of a new intern named Mark, Gigaler.com employee Griffin Matthews embarks on recording video interviews with the company’s co-founders, Tom Malloy and Chris Bannow. They share their ambitious vision of a predictive algorithm designed to tailor video content specifically for the visitors on their website’s homepage.
However, things take a dark turn when an anonymous source sends Griffin a disturbing video that seemingly captures a blonde woman in white, preparing to take her own life in a cemetery. Just when viewers think the video is harmless, it ends with a startling jump scare—a loud scream heralds the appearance of a masked figure charging towards the camera. Captivated by this horror element, Tom, Chris, and the rest of the team decide to showcase the video on their platform, leading to an explosive viral moment that significantly boosts Gigaler’s recognition.
Not long after, Griffin receives another eerie video. In this one, the blonde woman is seen on a bed before the masked man returns for another shocking scare. Eager to track down the creator for potential exclusive content, Tom assigns Abbi Snee to trace the video’s origin. She discovers the uploader’s information leading her to an address and phone number close to Rochester, New York.
Tom takes the initiative to call the number and connects with a nervous woman who identifies herself as Tara. She cryptically mentions a man named Francis about the video’s creation and reveals that her relationship with him is complex—he must not find out about her conversation with Tom. As more comments flood in regarding the videos, it’s noted that the depicted woman bears a striking resemblance to Tara Rogers, who had vanished years ago. Disturbed by this connection, Tom reaches out to Tara for confirmation, but she abruptly rebuffs him, insisting he never contact her again.
Further investigation reveals a tombstone linked to Francis Tumuelty, a figure once suspected of being Jack the Ripper. This discovery leads Tom and his team to theorize that they may have been the targets of an elaborate hoax. Undeterred, Tom pitches the idea of turning their unnerving experience into enticing content to draw traffic to their site. He convinces Chris, Griffin, and Abbi to accompany him on a trip to Rochester to confront Tara about the prank. Their journey includes a surprising visit to the tombstone of Francis Tumblety before they attempt to reach Tara’s residence.
After their fruitless attempt to engage Tara at her home, Tom, Griffin, and Abbi spend the night at Emma’s—Abbi’s friend—where they share a meal while mulling over the mysterious Tara Rogers.
The next day, Tom and Griffin decide to make another attempt at visiting Tara. Upon finding the side door left ajar, the duo ventures inside the seemingly abandoned house. Amid the neglected surroundings, their discoveries grow increasingly grim—melted candles scattered on a mantle and jars filled with blood in the pantry. Their sinister exploration leads them upstairs to find the bedroom featured in the second screamer video. Just then, an alarming commotion erupts from Tom’s vehicle outside. As he steps out, Francis suddenly attacks Griffin—and upon Tom’s return, he finds himself besieged as well.
Meanwhile, at Emma’s place, Abbi shows Chris video footage captured the previous night, revealing a lurking presence outside Tara’s home. Unexpectedly, Tom texts Chris and Abbi, summoning them back to Tara’s house. Emma drives them there, but inside they uncover Tara curled up in an upstairs bedroom, crying. The horror escalates quickly when Francis ambushes Chris, forcing Abbi and Emma to flee for their lives. Ultimately, both women are relentlessly pursued and assaulted by Francis.
As the chilling events unfold, a new screamer video is unleashed online. To their horror, it features Abbi replacing Tara as the woman in white, standing before Francis’ grave, leaving them to wonder if they are all merely pawns in a gruesome game.
