In the midst of their football-filled lives, wide receiver Marvin “Shake” Tiller (character) and running back Billy Clyde Puckett are unwittingly entwined in a complex web of relationships with Barbara Jane, the daughter of their team owner “Big Ed” Bookman. As roommates to both Shake and Billy Clyde, Barbara Jane finds herself developing romantic feelings for her friends, an affection that is further fueled by Shake’s newfound confidence stemming from his participation in Friedrich Bismark’s self-improvement program, B.E.A.T.

As Shake’s self-assurance grows, so does his connection with Barbara Jane. The two share a moment of intimacy and begin making plans to tie the knot after the football season comes to a close. However, their relationship is put to the test when Barbara Jane decides to attend B.E.A.T. in an effort to understand the program’s transformative effects on Shake.

Meanwhile, Billy Clyde harbors his own secret desires for Barbara Jane, opting to enroll in the same B.E.A.T. training session without informing either her or Shake. As he navigates the arduous program, Billy Clyde learns to cope with its strict rules and eventually exhibits a profound display of repressed emotions during an exercise designed to reveal participants’ deepest fears.

When Billy Clyde emerges from his grueling training, he confesses to Shake that he initially signed up to better mock the program, but surprisingly claims to have “gotten it.” For a brief period, Billy Clyde pretends to have undergone a genuine transformation, peppering his conversations with B.E.A.T. jargon and clichés.
