TV producer Mickey Wagner and his creative team came up with an innovative idea for a reality show that would capture authentic family interactions without their knowledge. To execute this bold concept, Mickey’s colleague Shane randomly chose the unsuspecting Dennis Warwick and his family as the stars of their project. Under the pretense of winning a free vacation, Dennis, alongside his wife Katherine, teenager Amy, and their devoted dog Harry, left their home for a brief getaway. Meanwhile, Mickey’s crew clandestinely installed hidden cameras throughout the Warwick residence.

Upon their return, the project continued as the Warwicks were filmed during their private moments, all while a looming deadline had Mickey racing against time to deliver a sizzle reel by evening. In a scramble to meet demands from an executive, Mickey instructed Shane to create a diversion by taking their dog Harry, inducing panic within the family before Shane returned the pet. With the show now greenlit, Mickey capitalized on multiple lucrative sponsorship deals, including brands for peanut butter and personal products.

In a reckless scheme, Shane infiltrated the Warwick home to plant the condoms into Dennis’s bag, all the while trying not to alert Amy as he treated Harry to peanut butter snacks. However, Harry’s enthusiastic affection towards Amy led to an allergic reaction, resulting in a seizure that went unnoticed until her friend Stacy heard the chaos and called for help.

As Dennis and Katherine misattributed the peanut butter to their maid, they later stumbled upon the condoms, leading Dennis to bizarrely convince Katherine that they were souvenirs from work. This shocking discovery left Katherine feeling despair about their romance. To remedy this, Mickey arranged an audition for a charismatic woman named Francesca to seduce Dennis. In another twist, he manipulated Stacy into having liaisons with Amy’s boyfriend Mike before introducing her to Yvonne, a hired actress posing as a sympathetic peer.

When Dennis decisively refused Francesca’s advances, Mickey introduced Chad, a fitness trainer, to see if Katherine might falter. Their scheming bore fruit when Katherine entered an affair with Chad, which thrilled Mickey. Meanwhile, Yvonne’s negative influence led Amy down a slippery slope, culminating in a confrontation with Stacy that resulted in her being suspended and grounded by her parents.

In a desperate bid for freedom, Amy and Yvonne snuck out, eventually arriving at the door of a pornographer who persuaded them into modeling nude together. As the network clamored for more content, Mickey concocted a plan to stage a happy ending by kidnapping Harry again to reunite the family. Nevertheless, calamity ensued when Dennis, distracted by a fight between Katherine and Amy in their car, accidentally ran over and killed Harry.

The family faced disintegration as Katherine confessed her infidelity to Dennis, who was already struggling with the fallout of her affair. In a state of turmoil, Amy fled home and attended a party at Yvonne’s, only to have her nude photographs publicized by Mike, despite Yvonne’s false reassurances of privacy. Consumed by panic, Amy made a rash decision to drive, tragically hitting and killing a pregnant woman in her distress.

Meanwhile, Dennis teetered on the edge of despair, contemplating his own life as he held a gun to his head. The production crew observed in suspense, as Mickey chose not to intervene, believing that Dennis would ultimately stay his hand. When the news of Amy’s arrest reached him, Dennis succumbed to despair and, during a prison visit, discovered that his daughter took her own life, leaving him heartbroken.

Returning home, Dennis found Katherine and Chad in the throes of an affair. Frustrated and emotionally shattered, he attacked them with a fire poker before revealing Amy’s tragic fate. In a moment of rage and grief, he shot Katherine and turned his wrath toward Chad, who disclosed that this was all part of their reality show. As the horrific truth washed over him, Dennis chased after Mickey’s van, crashing it in a desperate frenzy.

In a climactic standoff, Dennis took Mickey hostage at gunpoint, only to be met with a chilling proposal of fame if he let Mickey go. Refusing to back down, Dennis aimed his gun but was met with a barrage of bullets from arriving police officers. The screen faded to black, leaving viewers to contemplate the aftermath of Amy’s devastating end, and in a shocking twist, two years later, it was revealed that the reality show documenting Mickey’s incarceration had unexpectedly become a smash hit.
