In New York City, we follow the journey of Sofia Lin, a couples counselor and sex therapist, who finds herself married to Rob, a charming yet somewhat aimless partner. Their lives take an intriguing turn when Sofia encounters a couple comprised of the slightly narcissistic former child star Jamie and his boyfriend, James, a former sex worker. The story unfolds as James proposes the idea of opening their relationship to new sexual experiences. During their initial consultation, an agitated Sofia unexpectedly slaps Jamie, only to later sheepishly admit her struggles with reaching orgasm.

As the narrative progresses, the couple invites Sofia to a unique weekly social/artistic/sexual salon in Brooklyn dubbed “Shortbus,” facilitated by the charismatic Justin Bond. Eager to explore her boundaries, Sofia gradually embraces new experiences, forming a close bond with a dominatrix named Severin. However, the dynamics of her relationship with Rob grow strained, leading him to join her at Shortbus in hopes of reigniting their intimacy.

Meanwhile, James and Jamie cross paths with an aspiring singer and former model named Ceth, leading to a complicated romantic entanglement. Their lives are interwoven with their voyeuristic neighbor, Caleb, who, sensing a threat to his own vicarious joy, confronts Ceth within the lively confines of Shortbus. As tensions rise, Sofia increasingly seeks refuge in sensory deprivation sessions with Severin, nurturing profound conversations that catalyze both their emotional healing journeys.

Their nights at Shortbus grow increasingly complex. During one poignant evening, Severin confesses her desire to leave sex work for an artistic career, leading to an unexpected sexual encounter that ultimately leaves Sofia unfulfilled once again. The film intensifies when James, grappling with inner turmoil, attempts to take his own life but is rescued by Caleb, who, despite his shyness, pens down his contact information on James’ unconscious face.

As the characters navigate their intertwined lives, connections deepen. An intimate scene unfolds at Caleb’s residence, marking a milestone in James’ self-discovery journey, culminating in a moment of vulnerability with Caleb. Concurrently, a paid encounter between Rob and Severin reveals Rob’s suppressed desires, revealing a deeper emotional struggle. Sofia’s dream sequences hint at her inner turmoil, culminating in a moment of climax—a communal blackout, symbolizing the collective frustration of the characters.

The film resonates with an uplifting tone as it concludes with a performance by Justin Bond at Shortbus amidst the blackout. Sofia’s discovery of Rob with Severin stirs complex emotions, yet as the ambiance shifts to one of energetic celebration led by the Hungry March Band, hope and connection flourish. Jamie and James find solace in one another, while Ceth and Caleb spark a new romance. Ultimately, Sofia encounters a couple, Nick and Leah, who fulfill her yearning for experimentation, and she achieves a long-elusive orgasm as the city’s lights flicker back to life, embodying the film’s exploration of love, desire, and personal awakening.
