In the Slayers universe, a powerful entity, known as the Lord of Nightmares, commands authority over the creation of at least four parallel worlds. Central to this realm is the Claire Bible, a legendary artifact teeming with the secrets needed to reclaim its “true form,” a goal only achievable through the annihilation of these worlds, reverting them to their primordial chaos. What is perplexing, however, is that the Lord of Nightmares chooses to remain inactive, permitting these worlds to develop without interference. In this setting, a constant, fierce conflict rages between gods (shinzoku) and demons (mazoku), where a victory for the gods heralds peace, while the triumph of the monsters results in devastation and a return to chaos.

In the Slayers realm, a tense stalemate exists between Flare Dragon Ceifeed and Ruby-Eye Shabranigdu, two formidable forces locked in perpetual combat. This deadlock reaches a climax when Ceifeed divides Shabranigdu’s essence into seven fragments, sealing them within human souls, to thwart his resurrection. As these souls reincarnate, the fragments weaken, leading ultimately to Shabranigdu’s demise. Yet, this extraordinary accomplishment takes a toll on Ceifeed, forcing him to descend into the Sea of Chaos, leaving behind four residual aspects of himself in the world. A millennium before the events of Slayers, one of Shabranigdu’s fragments resurrects inside the powerful sorcerer Lei Magnus, sparking the Resurrection War against Aqualord Ragradia, a remnant of Ceifeed. Ultimately, Shabranigdu claims victory, but Aqualord, using her remaining strength, entraps him in a magical ice block within the Kataart Mountains. Notably, Shabranigdu’s minions continue to roam, cloaking a portion of the world within a mystical barrier, which only allows demons to enter.

Within the Slayers domain, four distinct forms of magic dominate: Black, White, Shamanistic, and Holy. The latter two, though differing in methods, share a significant connection to nature itself. In contrast, Black magic stands as a far more sinister force, drawing upon the dark energies of demons, wielding the potential for utter devastation, notably through attacks like the infamous Dragon Slave.

White magic is an enigma, practiced by sorcerers for both benevolent and protective purposes, such as healing and shielding. Shamanistic magic involves the manipulation of fundamental elements—earth, wind, fire, water, and spirit—allowing its users to cast both offensive spells and simple conveniences. Exemplary spells like Lei Wing, Fireball, and Elemekia Lance showcase the strength of this magical form.

Once deemed the most potent, Holy magic found itself greatly diminished by an unseen barrier until the fall of Hellmaster Phibrizzo. It draws on the divine power of the gods, making it unreachable for those confined by the demons’ realm.

In a realm where demons pose considerable challenges to defeat, only three types of magic can assert control over these malevolent beings: astral shamanistic magic, Holy magic, or Black magic that siphons strength from another, more powerful demon. Yet, a grim and ominous power lurks in the shadows—Chaos magic, an embodiment of calamity, emerges from the unfathomable energies of the Lord of Nightmares.

The fearless protagonist of this epic tale, Lina Inverse, is a teenage sorceress boasting an impressive array of titles and accolades, all of which she chooses to ignore. As she embarks on her unpredictable adventures, accompanied by an eclectic group of companions, Lina’s journeys oscillate between the whimsical and the downright perilous, sometimes even shifting whole worlds. Through these narratives, this indomitable warrior-witch documents her own saga, weaving tales that traverse from joyful and comedic to intense and world-threatening—each entry standing as a testament to her relentless spirit and profound love for magic.
