Slayers Quiz: Test your knowledge of the Slayers universe!

What is the name of the supreme entity that rules over the Slayers universe?

Plot Summary

In the Slayers universe, a supreme entity known as the Lord of Nightmares reigns supreme, responsible for the creation of at least four parallel worlds. At its core lies the Claire Bible, an ancient artifact containing the secrets to regaining its “true form” - a goal attainable only by destroying these worlds and returning them to their primordial state of chaos. Mysteriously, however, the Lord of Nightmares has chosen not to act upon this desire, allowing the worlds to unfold without interference. Within each world, gods (shinzoku) and demons (mazoku) clash in an eternal struggle for dominance. Should the gods emerge victorious, peace would ensue; conversely, should the monsters prevail, the world would be consumed by destruction and returned to its chaotic roots.

In the realm where Slayers takes place, two powerful entities, Flare Dragon Ceifeed and Ruby-Eye Shabranigdu, have reached a stalemate in their eternal war. This standoff culminated with Ceifeed splitting Shabranigdu’s essence into seven fragments, then sealing them within human souls to prevent his resurrection. As the souls reincarnate, the individual fragments gradually weaken, ultimately leading to Shabranigdu’s destruction. However, this monumental feat left Ceifeed exhausted, causing him to sink into the Sea of Chaos, leaving behind four remnants of himself in the world. A millennium prior to the events of Slayers, one of Ruby-Eye’s fragments revived within the body of Lei Magnus, a formidable sorcerer, triggering the Resurrection War against Aqualord Ragradia, a piece of Ceifeed. In the end, Shabranigdu emerged victorious, but Aqualord, utilizing her last vestiges of power, imprisoned him within a block of magical ice in the Kataart Mountains. Notably, Shabranigdu’s lieutenants remained at large, encasing a portion of the world within a mystical barrier, permitting only demons to traverse it.

In the realm of Slayers, four distinct forms of magic hold sway: Black, White, Shamanistic, and Holy. The latter two, while differing in their approaches, share a common thread - an intimate connection to the very fabric of nature. Black magic, conversely, is a far more malevolent force, drawing its power from the dark energies of demons themselves. This type of magic is capable of unleashing devastating destruction, as evidenced by the infamous Dragon Slave.

White magic, on the other hand, is an enigmatic and mysterious art that seems to defy explanation. Its practitioners employ this ancient knowledge for purposes both benevolent and protective, such as healing or shielding. Shamanistic magic, meanwhile, revolves around manipulating and altering the fundamental elements of our world - earth, wind, fire, water, and spirit - allowing its wielders to conjure spells for either offense or convenience. The likes of Lei Wing, Fireball, and Elemekia Lance are but a few examples of this potent form of magic.

Holy magic, once thought to be the most powerful of all, was rendered largely impotent by an unseen barrier until the demise of Hellmaster Phibrizzo. This mystical force relies on the divine power of the gods, making it inaccessible to those trapped within the confines of the demon’s realm.

In a world where demons are notoriously difficult to vanquish, only three types of magic hold sway over these malevolent entities: astral shamanistic magic, Holy magic, or Black magic that draws its strength from another demon more powerful than the one being targeted. However, there exists a dark and foreboding presence lurking in the shadows - a power so cataclysmic that it warps the very fabric of reality. This is Chaos magic, born from the unfathomable energies of the Lord of Nightmares.

Lina Inverse, the protagonist of this epic saga, is a teenage sorceress with an impressive résumé and a plethora of nicknames - all of which she studiously ignores. As she navigates her unpredictable adventures, accompanied by a diverse cast of traveling companions, Lina’s exploits range from whimsical and lighthearted to perilous and world-altering. Through the novels, this fearless warrior-witch chronicles her own history, weaving together tales that span the gamut from carefree and humorous to dramatic and apocalyptic - each chapter a testament to her unwavering spirit and unrelenting passion for magic.
