Plot Summary

In the opulent world of Monaco, Philippe Bartek (Artus), Stella (Camille Lou), and Alexandre (Louka Meliava) - the children of millionaire Francis (Gérard Jugnot) - have grown accustomed to a life of indulgence. Philippe’s nights are filled with revelry, while Stella’s days are spent on a shopping spree, and Alexandre’s evenings are marked by his promiscuous behavior. This trifecta of spoiled brats has been raised without the guiding hand of their mother, who passed away 15 years prior.

Stella, in particular, has caught the eye of Juan Carlos (Tom Leeb), a supposed playboy with a seemingly endless supply of family funds tied up in Argentina. Despite Francis’s reservations, Stella announces her engagement to Juan, whose plan is to squander Francis’s wealth on an extended honeymoon. Ferruccio (François Morel), Francis’s trusted advisor and godfather to the children, has grown increasingly concerned about their lack of direction.

Philippe’s creative endeavors are a constant source of amusement for Francis, who patiently tolerates his son’s harebrained schemes, such as designing a shoe that conforms to the wearer’s foot or offering a bespoke “walking-in” service where others wear your shoes until they’re comfortable. Meanwhile, Alexandre’s extramarital affairs have reached new heights of infidelity, with his conquests including the wife of their college dean, Mr. Guillaume Rombi, and the man’s two daughters - simultaneously.

Just as tensions between the siblings are reaching a boiling point, Francis suffers a heart attack, leaving him weakened but determined to protect his children from the consequences of their actions. The police arrive at the Francis estate, seeking to arrest the patriarch for allegedly orchestrating financial fraud. Ferruccio is revealed as the mastermind behind the scheme, which has left them with nothing.

With no choice but to flee Monaco and seek refuge in Marseille, Francis confiscates his children’s phones, aware that they could be tracked by the authorities. The family takes up residence in a dilapidated villa on the outskirts of town, where they must confront the harsh realities of living without their usual luxuries. As they struggle to make ends meet, Francis implores his children to find employment, knowing that they will need to rely on themselves if they hope to survive this crisis.

As Alexandre’s job search at the construction site yields nothing but rejection, Philippe attempts to drum up support for his innovative shoe design among his party circle, only to be met with indifference and a refusal to invest. Meanwhile, Stella seizes the opportunity to pilfer Philippe’s watch, sells it off, and indulges in a shopping spree. She then reaches out to Juan, feigning a holiday in Morocco, while also contacting Marguerite, who arrives bearing Matthias and essential supplies.

Undeterred by his lack of success, Philippe pays a visit to the employment exchange, where he demands a senior managerial position despite lacking any relevant qualifications. He further insists on a company car and a starting salary of 15,000 euros per month. However, his lofty expectations are met with a decidedly more modest offer: the job of a rickshaw driver for 1,500 euros per month. Matthias, meanwhile, secures Stella a position as a dishwasher at a salary of 1,200 euros per month.

As the kids spend their days outside, Ferruccio and Francis indulge in a leisurely lobster-fueled extravaganza, while Alexandre sleeps in until 2 pm. Francis narrowly intervenes to send Ferruccio packing just in time, allowing him to catch up with Alexandre. Stella and Philippe eventually scrape together enough money to learn that Alexandre has been slacking off without contributing to the household.

As Alexandre falls ill from consuming raw food outside, he begins lending a hand to Francis as they tackle the task of fixing the house. Matthias prompts Stella to reflect on her past behavior after a customer directs an insult at her during her shift. During dinner, Francis uncovers a piece of Stella’s history: her struggles with anorexia and weight loss over the course of a year.

The three kids confide in Francis about their difficulties communicating with him due to his secretary’s constant screening of phone calls. Alexandre reveals he spent a night behind bars, while Philippe shares his own stint in the hospital for two weeks. Francis, meanwhile, is absent from the family circle due to his business commitments in Tokyo.

Philippe faces stiff competition from a rival rickshaw puller who poaches his clients. However, after discovering their shared passion for shoes, they form an unlikely bond and Philippe shares his entrepreneurial vision with him. As Francis begins to forge a deeper connection with his children, word reaches Juan that Stella’s family has hit rock bottom financially. Ferruccio implores Francis to reveal the truth about the family’s financial struggles to his kids, citing Juan’s relentless inquiries around town.

Eventually, Juan tracks Francis down and reveals he is aware of the charade.

As Francis reveals to Stella, her brothers, and their children that he has settled his financial obligations in Argentina by mortgaging his properties, a weight is lifted off their collective shoulders. The news permits the entire family to return to their ancestral home, where they can begin rebuilding their lives. Meanwhile, back at the old homestead, Marguerite implores Francis to share the truth with Stella before she makes the fateful decision to marry Juan.

Before Francis has a chance to reveal the reality of his financial situation, Juan whisks Stella away to city hall, intent on sealing their union. Francis, determined to prevent this ill-fated marriage, rushes to intervene and manages to arrive just in time. With a heavy heart, he shares the truth with his children, begging Stella not to tie the knot with Juan.

The young woman’s indignation is palpable as she slaps her would-be suitor and sends him packing, warning Francis that his actions will result in his losing his children forever. The kids, their spirits crushed by Francis’s revelation that they are nothing more than “good-for-nothing bums,” depart for their grandfather’s abode, where Alexandre has established a thriving plumbing company. Philippe and his rickshaw partner have also started an innovative online shoe-selling venture.

On Stella’s birthday, Ferruccio accompanies Francis to visit her at home. The older man apologizes profusely to his children, who extend an olive branch by inviting him to join them for bread and oil, marking a tentative step towards reconciliation.
