Who is the sole survivor of the car crash on Brooklyn Bridge?
The film begins dramatically with a car crash on the Brooklyn Bridge, where we meet Henry Letham (Ryan Gosling), a survivor found next to a burning vehicle. The story then shifts to Sam Foster (Ewan McGregor), a psychiatrist, and his girlfriend, an art teacher named Lila (Naomi Watts). During a discussion about his patient, Sam reveals that Henry, a troubled college student and aspiring artist, is battling depression and paranoia. Henry expresses concerns about Sam’s sudden change from his former psychiatrist, Beth Levy (Janeane Garofalo), and ominously declares he intends to end his life that Saturday at midnight.
Lila, having herself struggled with suicidal thoughts, offers her support to help prevent Henry from taking such drastic measures. Sam embarks on a quest to uncover the truth behind Henry’s state of mind. His first step leads him to the disoriented state of Dr. Levy, who mutters cryptic phrases like, ”> I didn’t touch him; I know you’re not supposed to move him.” Upon investigating further, Sam encounters Henry’s mother (Kate Burton), who behaves strangely, insisting he is actually her son and avoiding Sam’s questions.
As Sam pieces together clues, he learns that Henry may have committed a terrible act against his parents but is confused by his mother’s claims and her dog, which reacts aggressively. After receiving medical attention, Sam confides in a police officer about his bizarre discoveries. To his shock, the officer reveals that Henry’s mother has passed away, triggering an unsettling series of déjà vu moments for Sam.
Continuing his search for Henry, Sam connects with Athena (Elizabeth Reaser), a waitress who has caught Henry’s attention. Sam meets Athena at a script reading where she performs lines from Hamlet. She agrees to guide Sam to Henry, but after a complicated journey down spiral staircases, Sam misplaces her and returns to the rehearsal space just as she resumes reciting the same lines as before.
With time running out, Sam finds himself at a bookstore frequented by Henry, where he discovers a poignant painting that Henry gifted for books about his admired artist, who tragically took his own life on the Brooklyn Bridge on his twenty-first birthday—Henry’s is the very next day. Realizing the parallel, Sam rushes to the bridge in a frantic bid to save Henry from his impending suicide.
As he reaches Henry on the bridge, a tense atmosphere envelops them. Just as Sam turns away in despair, Henry pulls the trigger, echoing the car crash that began the film. In a haunting twist, we learn that Henry was fatally injured in the initial accident and that everything witnessed throughout the film unfolded in his mind during his final moments, reminiscent of the narrative device used in An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge. Tragically, all characters including Sam and Lila are revealed to be strangers at the scene, and despite their efforts, Henry fails to escape the grip of fate. But in a poignant moment, he envisions a dreamlike connection with Lila, proposing to her, which she accepts—symbolizing the compassion he yearned for in life.
Ultimately, the film leaves viewers to ponder the blurring lines between reality and imagination as it unfolds in its emotional depth, presenting a profound meditation on life, loss, and the human psyche.
