Who plays the role of Ricky Bobby?

Plot Summary

Born with the need for speed coursing through his veins, Ricky Bobby (Will Ferrell) was raised under the watchful eye of his stern Christian mother, Lucy (Jane Lynch), while his errant father, Reese (Gary Cole), was noticeably absent from the picture. The memory of Reese’s profane Career Day speech still fresh in his mind, Ricky absorbed his father’s mantra: “If you ain’t first, you’re last!” - a credo that would guide him for the next 15 years.

As a young boy, Ricky’s innate talent for speed was harnessed by Terry Cheveaux (Adam McKay), who saw potential in the impetuous youngster. By the time Ricky reached adulthood, he had honed his skills to become a force to be reckoned with on the track, earning fame and fortune alongside Dennit Racing. It was during this period that he met the love of his life, Carly (Leslie Bibb), who would eventually become his wife.

Ricky’s meteoric rise to NASCAR stardom was marked by his decision to field an additional car for his best friend, Cal Naughton Jr. (John C. Reilly), cementing their bond and solidifying Ricky’s position as the team’s golden boy. However, his reign at the top was short-lived, as French Formula One driver Jean Girard (Sacha Baron Cohen) began to encroach on his territory, ultimately supplanting him as Dennit Racing’s star attraction.

Desperate to reclaim his dominance, Ricky pushed himself to the limit during a high-stakes race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, only to suffer a catastrophic crash that left his car airborne and upside down. As paramedics struggled to get him to safety, Ricky’s fear of being on fire led him on a wild goose chase around the track in his helmet and underwear.

Recovering from his ordeal, Ricky became convinced he was paralyzed, an illusion that persisted until he accidentally stabbed himself with a knife while attempting to prove his point. A humbling visit to Rockingham Speedway revealed the harsh truth: Ricky had lost his touch and was no longer the driver he once was. The news came as Carly prepared to marry Cal, the man who had unwittingly usurped Ricky’s place in her heart.

That fateful night, Cal extended an invitation to Ricky’s wedding, only to be rebuffed by a furious and wounded Ricky, whose sense of betrayal and disillusionment had reached a boiling point.

As Ricky brings his two sons, Walker and Texas Ranger (Houston Tumlin and Grayson Russell), back home, he takes a drastic step by trading in his high-flying life as a trucking magnate for the humble role of pizza delivery boy. However, this new career path is short-lived, as Ricky’s license is revoked after a series of mishaps, including a catastrophic collision with a shopping cart and a run-in with the law (literally), courtesy of Sheriff. With his life at an all-time low, Ricky’s world is turned upside down once again by the re-entry of Reese, who arrives with a bold plan to whip Ricky back into shape behind the wheel. Utilizing a unique blend of psychological manipulation and unconventional driving techniques, Reese aims to erase Ricky’s recent woes and restore his confidence. As Ricky embarks on this unexpected journey of self-discovery, he is forced to confront the lingering effects of Reese’s own demons, which have haunted him for years.

Upon reconnecting with Susan (Amy Adams), Ricky’s trusty assistant, at a local watering hole, she presents him with an opportunity to rekindle his passion for racing and leave the past behind. As he heeds her advice to get back behind the wheel of his beloved vehicle, Ricky finds himself falling deeply in love with Susan. Meanwhile, he manages to patch things up with Cal and Girard before the start of the AMP Energy 500, a pivotal moment that sets the stage for the events that will unfold.

As the big race approaches, Ricky faces an uphill battle as he’s forced to start from the back of the pack due to his rebuilt engine, cobbled together from spare parts donated by fellow independent drivers. Despite these odds, Ricky proves himself to be a force to be reckoned with, steadily chipping away at the competition until he finds himself neck-and-neck with Girard in the final laps. In a stunning turn of events, Cal is instructed by Dennit to take Ricky out of the race, but instead chooses to defy orders and pull ahead of his rival, allowing Ricky to make a daring pass and seize the lead. As the dust settles on lap 182, a shocking collision occurs when the replacement driver of Ricky’s original vehicle collides with Cal, causing a massive wreck that claims nearly every driver except for Ricky and Girard.

As the checkered flag looms into view, an unexpected collision between Ricky and Girard sends them tumbling down the homestretch, their vehicles careening towards the finish line in a spectacular display of chaos. Undeterred by the mishap, the two drivers spring into action, pounding the pavement with all the fury they can muster. Though Ricky ultimately crosses the line first, his triumphant smile is short-lived as he and Girard are disqualified for violating the rules of the road. In a stunning turn of events, Cal inherits the win by default, having been hovering in third place when the mayhem erupted. As the dust settles on this wild finale, Ricky and Cal finally put their differences aside, rekindling their bond with a warm, fuzzy sense of closure. Later that day, a merry band of friends - including Lucy, Susan, Walker and Texas Ranger, and Reese (of course) - reconvene in the parking lot to plot out a night on the town. Their mission? To engineer a dramatic exit from Applebee’s, a feat they’ve already accomplished once before with Ricky and Reese.
