Plot Summary

As the curtain opens on this captivating tale, we are introduced to three teenage girls - Frankie (Gideon Adlon), Tabby (Lovie Simone), and Lourdes (Zoey Luna) - who attempt to harness the power of magic, only to be thwarted by their inability to freeze time. Their quest for temporal control is a precursor to the extraordinary events that unfold as new residents arrive in town. Lily Schechner (Cailee Spaeny), accompanied by her therapist mother Helen (Michelle Monaghan), settles into her new life with Helen’s husband Adam Harrison (David Duchovny) and his three sons, Jacob (Charles Vandervaart), Isaiah (Donald MacLean Jr.), and Abe (Julian Grey). The arrival of this fresh face is met with awkwardness from the teenage boys, while Lily herself struggles to find her place.

The following day, during Lily’s first foray into her new high school, the three girls extend a hand of friendship after she suffers the indignity of being ridiculed by her classmates, particularly Timmy Andrews (Nicholas Galitzine). This act of kindness is met with a surprising display of telekinetic prowess as Lily pushes Timmy into the lockers when he taunts her. As a result, both are summoned to after-school detention, where Lily’s unique abilities are showcased as she communicates solely through her mind.

The trio’s connection grows stronger as they spend more time together, and it is during this period that they invite Lily to join their coven, recognizing her as the missing fourth piece of their mystical puzzle. This newfound camaraderie enables them to successfully freeze time in their first conjuring spell, marking a turning point in their journey.

Seeking revenge against Timmy for his previous transgressions, the girls cast a spell on him, using an intimate item they discovered during a midnight break-in at his residence. The next day, Timmy’s behavior betrays the effects of the curse, and he becomes increasingly sensitive to the machinations of the coven.

As Lily, Frankie, Tabby, and Lourdes continue to explore the limits of their powers, including levitation, Adam’s disapproval of their activities is met with Helen’s defense. Lily overhears this confrontation and escapes outside, where Abe shares his father’s authoritarian views with her.

The party hosted by Timmy serves as a catalyst for change as he apologizes to Lily and eventually becomes fast friends with the coven. During a project at Lily’s home, Timmy confides in the girls about his bisexuality, revealing that he has had intimate encounters with Jacob’s older brother Isaiah. Later, Lily places a love spell on Timmy using his sweatshirt as a focal point, culminating in a tender moment between the two.

As the morning sun casts its rays upon the unsuspecting coven, their teacher reveals a shocking truth: Timmy’s untimely demise has left them reeling. Lily, still grappling with the aftermath of her impromptu kiss and love spell, finds herself ostracized by her friends as they sever ties with her, binding themselves from magic in a desperate attempt to shield themselves from its unpredictable power.

As Lily begins to suspect Adam’s sinister motives, she turns to her mother for guidance, only to be met with resistance. Undeterred, she sets out to uncover any incriminating evidence against him, leading her to his office where a startling discovery awaits: her own adoption papers, carefully hidden away by Helen. The revelation sends Lily reeling as Helen’s true nature is finally revealed - she is not only her patient but also the unwitting vessel for Adam’s dark desires.

In the aftermath of Timmy’s funeral, Helen agrees to grant Lily’s wish and relocate them, but at a steep cost: she knows about Lily’s Wiccan powers and demands that she surrender them. As Lily’s suspicions grow, so too does the treachery surrounding her - Helen shape-shifts into Adam, her true form revealed as the ruse unravels. With a crushing blow, Adam knocks Lily unconscious, leaving her at the mercy of his pagan cult.

As Lily awakens in a foreboding forest, surrounded by the dark magic that has consumed her, she is confronted by Adam’s chilling confession: Timmy’s life was extinguished by his own hand, and hers will meet a similar fate unless she transfers her powers to him. But when Timmy’s spirit reaches out to Lily’s friends through an ancient Ouija board, they rally together to rescue their friend, only to be thwarted by Adam’s cunning guile.

In the heat of battle, Lily’s friends join forces, leveraging their elemental powers to vanquish the evil that has consumed them. In a blaze of fury, they exact justice upon Adam, burning him to ashes. As the dust settles, Lily is left to ponder the true extent of her Wiccan abilities and the consequences that come with wielding such power.

As she navigates this new reality, Lily finds solace in her friendships, opting instead to bind their powers in a quest for greater control. But just as they begin to heal and learn from their experiences, Helen reappears, whisking Lily away to a nearby clinic hospital/asylum where a shocking revelation awaits: the birth mother she has longed to meet is none other than Nancy Downs (Fairuza Balk). In this poignant final scene, Lily takes her first steps towards uncovering the truth about her past and forging a new future with the mother she never knew.
