What does Aja's journey begin with?
Ajatashatru “Aja” Lavash Patel, a clever street magician from the vibrant streets of Mumbai, captivates three young inmates with his remarkable saga. His adventure kicks off with the tragic loss of his mother, propelling him on a heartfelt journey to find his estranged father in Paris, armed with nothing more than a counterfeit €100 note. Upon his arrival in the dazzling City of Light, Aja encounters Marie Riviere, an enchanting woman whose charm and intellect instantly draw him in, even though their first meeting is marred by deceit.
As Aja plunges into a whirlwind of exhilarating escapades, he experiences an extraordinary series of transitions—from an IKEA wardrobe to the bustling streets of London, then to the historic ruins of Rome, and eventually onto a vessel bound for Tripoli, Libya. However, his adventure takes a precarious twist when he is swindled out of the money earned from selling a treasured childhood memory sewn into a shirt. Amidst this upheaval, he meets Wiraj, a Somali refugee in dire straits. Together, they devise a clever strategy to retrieve their lost funds and ensure it reaches those in desperate need at a nearby refugee camp.
With just enough money remaining for a forged passport and a return ticket to India, Aja makes his way back to Paris, where serendipity allows him to reconnect with Marie—now free from her former commitment. Upon returning to India, he swaps his streetwise antics for a more stable life as an educator at a local school. The story takes a romantic turn when Marie reappears, having ended her engagement, leading to a tender moment that signifies the culmination of Aja’s tale to his eager listeners. He presents them with the chance to attend his school regularly in exchange for their release from a four-year judicial sentence, which they wholeheartedly embrace.
Just before the film draws to a close, one of Aja’s colleagues nudges him with a question, “Was that a true story?” Aja’s reply is unwavering, echoing his conviction as he asserts: > “Yes, all the important bits.”
