When Marie suddenly appears, having ended her engagement, the pair shares a romantic moment, which marks the culmination of Aja’s narrative to the three young listeners. As he offers them an opportunity to attend his school daily in exchange for their freedom from a four-year judicial custody, the children eagerly accept. Just before the film concludes, one of Aja’s colleagues poses a question: “Was that a true story?” To which Aja responds with a resolute affirmation: “Yes, all the important bits.”
