As a tender young red fox finds himself suddenly without parental guidance, a compassionate trio of friends - the wise and watchful Big Mama the owl, the whimsical Dinky the finch, and the energetic Boomer the woodpecker - orchestrate his adoption by the kindly Widow Tweed, who christens him Tod. Meanwhile, on the adjacent property, Amos Slade welcomes home a rambunctious young hound pup named Copper, introducing him to his trusty hunting companion, Chief, whose initial disdain towards Copper gradually gives way to affection. The two youngsters, Tod and Copper, cross paths and form an unshakeable bond, vowing eternal companionship. As the seasons pass, their friendship deepens, but tensions rise as Amos' patience with Copper's wandering ways wears thin, ultimately leading him to restrain Copper with a leash. In a chance encounter, Tod unwittingly awakens Chief, prompting Amos and his loyal canine companion to give chase until Tweed intervenes, resulting in an ominous warning: should Tod trespass on Slade property again, he will face grave consequences.

As the years go by, Tod and Copper mature into adulthood. Copper returns as a skilled hunting dog, expected to track down foxes with precision. Late one night, Tod sneaks over for a visit, only to stir Chief's vigilance, which in turn alerts Amos. A frantic chase ensues, culminating in Copper apprehending Tod before diverting Amos' attention. As Tod attempts an escape on the railroad tracks, Chief corners him once more, but fate intervenes: a speeding train strikes Tod, sending him tumbling into the river below, where he suffers a crippling leg injury. Blinded by anger and betrayal, Copper and Amos vow to exact revenge upon Tod, convinced that his actions were intentional. Recognizing Tod's life is no longer safe under her care, Tweed decides to rehome him at a game reserve. Tod faces a tumultuous night in the woods before Big Mama intervenes, introducing him to Vixey, a charming female fox who helps him adapt to his new surroundings.

As Amos and Copper venture into the reserve, their intentions swiftly turn from harmless exploration to ruthless pursuit of Tod and Vixey. The ensuing chase reaches its boiling point when an unexpected encounter with a gargantuan bear sends them scrambling for cover. Amos' momentary lapse in judgment results in him tumbling into one of his own traps, leaving his rifle tantalizingly out of reach. Copper, undeterred by the danger, launches a valiant defense against the behemoth, only to be mere seconds from meeting its demise. Tod, ever the hero, rushes to Copper's aid, engaging the bear in a fierce battle that ultimately culminates in their shared tumble down a roaring waterfall. As Copper approaches Tod's motionless form, battered and exhausted on the lake bed below, Amos appears at the precipice, rifle at the ready, poised to exact vengeance. However, Copper stands firm, refusing to budge, and Amos, finally grasping the gravity of their shared predicament, spares Tod's life for Copper's sake, sheathing his weapon and departing with Copper in tow. The two former foes share a poignant, fleeting moment of understanding before parting ways.

Meanwhile, Tweed nurses Amos back to health, much to the latter's mortification. As Amos drifts off to sleep, Copper's mind wanders back to the fateful day when their paths first converged with Tod's. Coincidentally, Vixey joins Tod atop a hill, as they gaze down upon the humble abodes of Amos and Tweed, now forever changed by the events that have transpired.
