Plot Summary

As Josef Mengele (in exile under a pseudonym) traverses the Argentine landscape in 1960, he becomes fixated on a family’s journey, carefully following their route to ensure his own safety. His destination lies in western Patagonia’s picturesque Bariloche, where he has secured accommodations. However, instead of settling into solitude, Mengele is drawn to Lilith, the young daughter of the family, who bears scars from her premature birth and subsequent bullying at school. The former Nazi doctor sees an opportunity to apply his expertise, suggesting a treatment to accelerate her growth, which Lilith’s mother Eva readily accepts, keeping the arrangement hidden from her husband Enzo.

As Mengele’s presence in their lives deepens, he becomes enthralled by the prospect of twin siblings on the way, and Eva’s pregnancy only piques his fascination. He meticulously documents every detail about the family, including Lilith and her development under his care. However, Lilith begins to experience adverse effects from the growth hormones, leading Enzo to demand Mengele’s departure from their hotel. Just as tensions reach a boiling point, Eva goes into labor, and Mengele is called upon to assist with the premature births.

As the twins take their first breaths, Mengele’s true nature remains concealed, even as he becomes increasingly consumed by his experiments on the newborns. Meanwhile, Nora Eldoc, a keen-eyed photographer, is hot on his trail, in communication with Israeli Nazi war criminal hunters. Despite having concrete evidence of Mengele’s whereabouts, the hunters move at a glacial pace, allowing the former SS officer to slip away unnoticed as he boards a sea plane, escaping into the distance. The tragic fate that awaits Nora Eldoc serves as a poignant reminder: she is brutally murdered just hours after Mengele’s departure, her body discovered two days later buried in the snow. Ultimately, Mengele remains at large, his ultimate demise occurring in 1979, when he meets a watery grave in Brazil.
