As the curtain closes on The Girl Who Played with Fire, Lisbeth Salander (played by) finds herself airlifted to a Gothenburg hospital, her life hanging precariously in the balance following a brutal attack at the hands of her father, crime lord Alexander Zalachenko. Meanwhile, journalist Mikael Blomkvist, whose path had previously intersected with Salander's, sets out to clear her name from the murder charges that now hang over her like a dark cloud. His motivation stems from his conviction that she was deliberately framed by the clandestine "Section", a rogue entity within the Swedish Security Service that had protected Zalachenko after he defected from the Soviet Union.

As the stakes grow higher, Section operatives Evert Gullberg and Fredrik Clinton hatch a sinister plan to silence both Zalachenko and Salander in order to preserve their illicit activities. Their scheme begins to unravel when Gullberg arrives at the hospital, dispatching Zalachenko with ruthless efficiency before taking his own life. Clinton, however, is determined to see Salander recommitted to the mental institution where she had been institutionalized as a child, after nearly killing Zalachenko.

In a bold move, Blomkvist convinces Salander's doctor to smuggle an internet phone into her hospital room, allowing her to connect with her fellow hacker, Plague. Through this clandestine means, Salander sets in motion a chain of events that will ultimately expose the corruption at the heart of the Section. She begins by sharing evidence with Blomkvist that implicates Annika Giannini, her lawyer and his sister, in a shocking web of deceit. This revelation is tied to the video footage showing her state-appointed guardian, Nils Bjurman - a former Section employee - committing heinous acts against Salander.

As the clock ticks down to Salander's murder trial, Ronald Niedermann, Zalachenko's ruthless son and enforcer, remains at large, wanted for the brutal slaying of a police officer. Sonny, a member of an outlaw motorcycle gang that had previously crossed paths with Salander, discovers that Niedermann has been using his hideout as a sanctuary. The discovery of his brother's lifeless body and his girlfriend's gruesome injuries only serves to galvanize Sonny's desire for revenge.

As the day of reckoning arrives, Salander makes her dramatic entrance in court, her unyielding spirit reflected in her bold attire: piercings, a mohawk, black makeup, and black leather. As an expert witness for the prosecution, Dr. Peter Teleborian attempts to portray Salander as delusional and violent, but Giannini's tenacious cross-examination soon reduces his credibility to tatters. With each passing moment, the truth begins to seep out, threatening to expose the very fabric of the Section's sinister operations.

As Giannini's impassioned testimony unfolds, law enforcement authorities swoop in to apprehend those connected to the clandestine Section, securing the site of their illicit activities. In the courtroom, Blomkvist and Giannini present airtight evidence that Teleborian had fabricated his diagnosis at the behest of the Section, further revealing that incriminating proof against Salander was deliberately planted. This damning revelation culminates in Teleborian's arrest for possession of child pornography, uncovered by Plague after infiltrating his laptop. The court subsequently releases Salander from custody.

Meanwhile, Salander inspects a property inherited from her father and stumbles upon a warehouse that serves as the hideout of her step-brother Niedermann. In a desperate attempt to eliminate her, he launches a violent attack, but Salander retaliates by immobilizing his feet with a precision-crafted nail gun. Seizing the opportunity, she contacts Sonny, providing him with intel on Niedermann's whereabouts and then notifies the authorities.

Later, Blomkvist pays Salander a visit to share news of Niedermann's demise at the hands of the motorcycle gang, whose subsequent arrest was carried out at the warehouse. With this chapter in her life closed, Blomkvist and Salander reconcile, their differences put aside as they part ways.
