As the sun rises over the quaint town of Tickle Head, Newfoundland and Labrador, young Murray French begins his tale of woe and redemption. He regales us with stories of his father, a stalwart fisherman, and the tight-knit community where everyone knows their place and the value of hard work. The air is thick with domestic bliss as Murray's parents thrive in their happy home.

Years later, Murray, now a grown man, joins the throngs of townsfolk at the post office to collect their meager welfare cheques from Kathleen, the kindly postmistress, and Henry Tilley, the bank manager. As they line up, Murray's personal woes come flooding back: his wife is abandoning him for greener pastures in St. John's.

The community is abuzz with news of a proposed petrochemical factory, which promises to bring prosperity and jobs to Tickle Head. However, there's one catch - the company requires a resident doctor to staff its on-site medical facility. The townsfolk have been searching high and low for just such a physician, but to no avail.

Murray seizes upon this as his ticket out of despair. He convinces himself that a factory is exactly what Tickle Head needs, and a resident doctor would be the key to securing the deal. Little does he know, his own mayor has other plans - one that involves leaving town with his family for better opportunities in St. John's.

Meanwhile, Dr. Paul Lewis, a plastic surgeon from St. John's, finds himself in a bind when a security agent discovers cocaine in his luggage during a flight. The former mayor of Tickle Head, who just happens to be the security agent, makes a deal with Dr. Lewis - he'll overlook the doctor's little mistake if he agrees to spend one month in Tickle Head.

Murray sees an opportunity and sets out to "seduce" Dr. Lewis into becoming a long-term resident of Tickle Head. He spins a web of deception, convincing the townsfolk that Dr. Lewis is the answer to their prayers. As part of his plan, Murray convinces everyone to pretend they're playing cricket, Dr. Lewis's favorite sport, and taps into the doctor's phone conversations to learn more ways to entice him to stay.

Just as things are falling into place, a petrochemical company executive visits Tickle Head and drops a bombshell - the rival town of St. Anne has made a more attractive offer, complete with a bribe. The executive demands a bribe of $100,000 from Murray (posing as the mayor) before they'll even consider awarding the factory to Tickle Head. To make matters worse, he expresses concern about the town's small population being unsuitable for a factory.

As Murray stepped into the bank, he was met with skepticism by Henry, who denied his loan application without hesitation. Undeterred, Murray pressed on, highlighting the absurdity of relying solely on human interaction in this digital age. He cleverly pointed out that Henry could easily be replaced by a reliable ATM, leaving him vulnerable to being laid off at any moment. Henry's concerns about going against bank instructions began to outweigh his initial refusal, and he reluctantly reconsidered the loan, knowing that his job was on the line.

Meanwhile, the townspeople's deceitful charm had taken its toll on Lewis, as the revelation of his fiancée Helen's infidelity with his best friend left him reeling. The discovery, coupled with the town's false promises of authenticity and integrity, played havoc with his emotions. As he stood before the crowd, accepting the position in a heartfelt speech praising their supposed virtues, Murray shamefully whispered in his ear that another doctor had already seized the opportunity, crushing Lewis's spirits.

Kathleen ultimately broke the news to Dr. Lewis, prompting him to confront Murray as he was finalizing the factory deal. Murray delivered an impassioned plea, and after a moment of introspection, Lewis agreed to stay on, effectively sealing the fate of the factory. With the agreement in place, the town's fortunes began to shift once more.

As the dust settled, the newly opened factory brought renewed dignity to the community. Murray reconciled with his wife, while Henry, now replaced by an ATM, found a new path forward. The film concluded on a satisfying note, mirroring Murray's nostalgic opening flashback, as the town and its residents basked in the glow of redemption.
