What is Harry Madox's profession when he arrives in the small Texas town?

Plot Summary

As the scorching Texas sun beats down on the dusty streets of this small town, Harry Madox (actor name) assumes a new identity as a used car salesman, seeking to escape the demons of his past. His gaze is drawn to Gloria Harper, who toils away in the loan office of the dealership where he works. It’s not just her captivating smile that catches his attention - it’s the peculiar wooden fruit adorning her shoes, a unique feature that piques his curiosity. Meanwhile, Dolly Harshaw, the wife of the dealership owner, flaunts her own similar shoes and sets her sights on Harry, whispering sweet nothings in his ear. Their torrid affair blossoms quickly, but beneath the surface, tensions simmer.

As Harry becomes acclimated to his new surroundings, he uncovers a fascinating fact about the town’s bank staff: they’re all volunteer firefighters, their attention often diverted by the call of duty. With this knowledge, he concocts a plan to create a diversion across the street, deliberately setting fire to an unoccupied building to draw them away from their post. While they’re occupied with putting out the flames, Harry seizes the opportunity to execute a daring heist, slipping into the bank to make off with the loot.

However, Harry’s conscience soon gets the better of him when he learns of a homeless individual trapped in the burning building. Despite the danger, he ventures back into the inferno to rescue the stranded man, his heroics a testament to his humanity. The town sheriff, though suspicious of Harry’s involvement in the bank robbery, is ultimately thwarted by Dolly’s alibi and subsequent blackmail. She demands that Harry eliminate her husband, whom she married for his wealth, threatening to expose him if he refuses. When Harry hesitates, Dolly takes matters into her own hands, exploiting her husband’s weakened heart during a passionate tryst, effectively silencing him forever.

In the aftermath of this double-edged drama, Harry is faced with the harsh reality that his actions have set in motion a chain reaction of events that will forever alter the lives of those around him.

As the web of deceit continues to unravel, Harry discovers that his love interest Gloria is being mercilessly blackmailed by Frank Sutton, a ruthless criminal with a penchant for exploiting the vulnerable. The source of Sutton’s leverage lies in a cache of compromising photographs he took of Gloria and her friend Irene Davey, whose own secret life had been laid bare after an encounter with her former teacher. Harry’s determination to protect Gloria drives him to confront Sutton, but their tense exchange devolves into a brutal fight, leaving Sutton severely battered. Despite his broken state, Sutton remains resolute in his demands, further entrenching himself in the quagmire of corruption.

Harry’s desire for justice and his love for Gloria propel him to visit Sutton at his home, where he stumbles upon a scene that shatters his perceptions: Sutton engaged in an intimate encounter with a mysterious woman wearing wooden fruit shoes identical to those cherished by Gloria. As Harry and Sutton clash, the unknown woman suffers a gruesome facial injury, while Sutton ultimately meets a violent demise at Harry’s hands. In a desperate bid to deflect suspicion from himself, Harry plants incriminating evidence and disposes of the incriminating footwear, convinced it belongs to his unsuspecting love.

With Sutton eliminated, Harry collects a substantial reward for providing a tip that helps the police “crack” the bank robbery case, which had been linked to Sutton’s sudden acquisition of a new car. His plans to marry Gloria and whisk her away to the Caribbean Islands now within reach, he prepares to settle into a life with his beloved.

However, Dolly’s unexpected intervention shatters Harry’s illusions. Producing a certified letter entrusted to her attorney in the event of her passing, she reveals a shocking account that will implicate him in Sutton’s murder and the bank robbery. Gloria arrives on the scene, and Dolly begins recounting her illicit affair with Harry, as well as her knowledge of his use of company funds to bribe Sutton.

As the truth dawns on Harry, he realizes that it was Dolly who had been having a torrid encounter with Sutton, not Gloria. The wooden fruit shoes now take on a sinister significance, as they are revealed to be Dolly’s signature accessory. In a stunning twist, Dolly proposes a deal: she will refrain from reporting her findings to the authorities in exchange for Gloria’s agreement to repay the funds embezzled during their affair.

Gloria, her world turned upside down by the revelation of Harry’s duplicity, flees his presence in disgust. Consumed by rage and humiliation, Harry attempts to strangle Dolly but ultimately cannot bring himself to take her life. His pride wounded, Harry resigns himself to a future with Dolly, departing town alongside her.
