What is Bastian trying to conquer while attending school?

Plot Summary

As Bastian Balthazar Bux (Bastian) endeavors to conquer his fear of heights and join the school swimming team, his psyche remains entangled with Carl Conrad Coreander’s ancient tome-filled bookstore. It is here that he rekindles his relationship with the Neverending Story, only to be beckoned by the enigmatic Childlike Empress, whose ethereal voice echoes through the pages, imploring him for aid.

Bastian becomes ensnared in the mystical world of Fantasia when he brings home the book and the AURYN amulet magically detaches from its cover. The artifact’s power summons him to this fantastical realm, where he encounters Nimbly, a bird-like creature with an air of mystery, and reunites with Atreyu, a stalwart companion in the resplendent Silver City. As they navigate the city’s majestic architecture, they narrowly evade the armored giants, behemoths that roam the land, driven by a malevolent force known as the “Emptiness.” This dark energy has been unleashed by Xayide, an evil sorceress who seeks to dominate Fantasia.

In his quest to thwart her plans, Bastian finds himself beset by Tri-Face, an inventor of sinister intent. The latter creates an apparatus that systematically erases Bastian’s memories each time he uses the AURYN amulet to make a wish. Nimbly, seemingly sent as a spy, endeavors to persuade Bastian to make reckless wishes, hoping to render him forgetful of his purpose.

As Bastian and Atreyu embark on their perilous journey to find the Childlike Empress, they encounter Xayide, who initially appears to abandon her quest for power. However, she soon manipulates Bastian into believing that his friends will turn against him, coaxing him into making a series of absurd wishes. Meanwhile, Atreyu grows increasingly uneasy about their aimless trek.

In the midst of these events, Bastian’s father, Barney (Bastian’s father), becomes alarmed by his son’s disappearance. He discovers the Neverending Story in Bastian’s room and is directed to Carl Conrad Coreander’s bookstore address. Barney rushes to confront Mr. Coreander, only to find the establishment abandoned. Later, with a police officer in tow, he returns to the bookstore, where he stumbles upon the book. To his astonishment, he finds that the tome is recording Bastian’s adventures in Fantasia and that he himself is mentioned within its pages.

As Atreyu’s determination to thwart Xayide’s sinister plans becomes increasingly clear, a deep-seated mistrust begins to fester within Bastian (character), who is convinced that his friend has betrayed him. This perceived treachery culminates in a heart-wrenching confrontation between the two, resulting in Atreyu’s tragic fall from a precipice and subsequent demise. Bereft of hope, Bastian returns to Xayide, only to discover the machinery necessary for self-discovery, revealing that he has but two memories remaining: those of his beloved mother and father.

Undeterred by his dire circumstances, Bastian ventures back to the ruins of Silver City, whereupon he draws upon the power of his penultimate memory of his mother to revive Atreyu from the great beyond. Xayide, however, attempts to coerce Bastian into utilizing his final wish to return home, but instead, he chooses to bestow compassion upon the sorceress by wishing for her to possess a heart. This selfless act of kindness imbues Xayide with profound emotional depth, nullifying the Emptiness that has driven her actions and served as the source of her dark power.

As Fantasia is reborn, so too are Bastian’s memories, and he finds himself face-to-face with the Childlike Empress, who expresses her deepest gratitude for his heroic intervention. In a poignant display of trust, Bastian presents her with the sacred Auryn amulet, and she guides him toward the path that will ultimately lead him back to his father: a precipitous cliff overlooking a breathtaking waterfall, designed to help him confront and overcome his fear of heights.

With Barney (character) and Atreyu’s (character) encouragement, Bastian takes the leap of faith, bounding off the edge of the cliff and landing safely on the other side. As he is reunited with his father, the Auryn amulet is drawn back onto the cover of the mystical book, its power now spent.
