Plot Summary

As the dusty trail unwinds before them, a young singer and his ambitious sister/manager embark on a journey to the country music capital of Nashville, driven by the promise of stardom. However, their path is marked by the stark reality that only one of them possesses the spark needed to ignite a lasting career. Travis Child (Quaid), a country crooner who once rode the waves of fame with his hit single but now languishes in relative obscurity, is accompanied on this odyssey by his sharp-witted and determined sister, Amanda (McNichol). Her plans are constantly thwarted by Travis’s lack of drive and propensity for indulgence in the finer things in life - good times, bad company, and the fleeting thrills of whiskey.

As they navigate the labyrinthine highways, Amanda crosses paths with a state trooper named Conrad (Hamill), whose genuine concern for her well-being serves as a beacon of hope amidst the chaos. Yet, their reunion is short-lived, as Travis’s antics ultimately lead to his arrest for public intoxication. In an effort to pay off his fine, he takes on a bartending gig at Andy’s, a ramshackle roadside tavern where he finds himself smitten with Melody, a free-spirited young woman harboring a possessive ex-boyfriend - none other than the deputy sheriff, Seth James. A violent confrontation ensues, culminating in Travis taking Seth down with a hidden gun and subsequently driving off into the night in his adversary’s car, only to meet a fatal demise.

As Amanda buries her brother and bids farewell to Melody, she sets out on the open road, accompanied by her loyal canine companion. Meanwhile, Conrad, determined to leave the past behind, strips down to his underwear in his police cruiser, his commitment to their future together palpable. With a newfound sense of purpose, Amanda decides to join him, and together they drive off into the unknown, leaving the trials and tribulations of Nashville’s honky-tonks far behind.
