What incident leads to Charles Dreyfus's return to madness?

Plot Summary

As Charles Dreyfus emerges from his three-year stint in a psychiatric hospital, he finds himself poised for release pending a sanity board evaluation. His psychiatrist informs him that this afternoon will be the deciding moment, but before then, his former protégé Jacques Clouseau (no stranger to uninvited visits) bursts into the room, determined to plead Dreyfus’s case as a testament to their complicated history. In a mere five minutes, Clouseau’s presence sends Dreyfus spiraling back into madness.

Dreyfus soon makes his escape from the hospital and sets his sights on eliminating Clouseau once again. This time, he orchestrates a meticulous plan involving career criminals and the abduction of renowned nuclear physicist Hugo Fassbender, along with his daughter Margo. Dreyfus coerces Fassbender into building a devastating doomsday weapon in exchange for the freedom of his loved ones.

Meanwhile, Clouseau travels to England to investigate the kidnapping, leaving a trail of chaos and ineptitude in his wake as he interrogates the Fassbender household staff, including Jarvis, the flamboyant cross-dressing butler. Despite Jarvis’s untimely demise at the hands of the kidnappers - who had deemed him a dangerous witness - Clouseau uncovers a crucial clue that leads him to the Oktoberfest in Munich, West Germany.

As Dreyfus employs Fassbender’s invention to devastating effect, disintegrating the United Nations Building in New York City and leveraging global leaders into ordering their operatives to eliminate Clouseau. The president of the United States (Gerald Ford) and his secretary of state (Henry Kissinger), among others, become pawns in Dreyfus’s game of international blackmail.

However, as nations vie for favor with Dreyfus by taking out Clouseau, a series of assassinations unfolds, resulting in a bloody stalemate. With all other operatives neutralized, the agents of the Soviet Union and Egypt remain - both hell-bent on claiming victory and the doomsday machine.

As a cleverly disguised henchman of Dreyfus masquerades as Clouseau, he meets an untimely demise at the hands of a cunning Egyptian assassin. The Egyptian operative, however, mistakenly falls head over heels for Russian agent Olga Bariosova (who shares his error in judgment), and their ill-fated love affair ensues. After the Egyptian’s departure, the genuine Clouseau arrives at his hotel room to find Olga ensconced in his bed, her affections towards him both perplexing and intriguing. Through her intel, Clouseau discovers Dreyfus’s location at a Bavarian castle, where he’s been celebrating an erroneous report of his own demise - brought on by toothache-induced despair, which prompts him to send for a dentist.

Meanwhile, Clouseau, unaware that his nemesis is mere miles away, learns that a dental emergency has arisen at the very same castle. Donning a makeshift German dentist disguise, he gains entry to the fortress (previous attempts having been thwarted by his own ineptitude and the drawbridge’s stubborn refusal to budge). Unrecognized by Dreyfus, Clouseau slips him and another accomplice a dose of nitrous oxide, reducing them to helpless laughter. As they revel in their intoxication, Clouseau mistakenly extracts the wrong tooth, prompting Dreyfus to realize that his dentist is actually none other than the elusive Clouseau.

Escaping the castle with his life, Clouseau inadvertently thwarts Dreyfus’s plans when a medieval catapult launches him onto the doomsday machine, causing it to malfunction and fire on Dreyfus and the castle itself. As the remaining henchmen - Fassbender, his daughter, and Clouseau - flee the dissolving castle, Dreyfus takes up residence at the pipe organ, playing a haunting rendition of “Tiptoe Through the Tulips” as he disintegrates into nothingness.

Returning to Paris, Clouseau finds Olga awaiting him in bed, only for their tryst to be rudely interrupted by Cato’s latest surprise attack. The ensuing chaos sends all three tumbling into the Seine when the reclining bed snaps back upright and crashes through the wall, adding yet another misadventure to Clouseau’s already impressive tally of mishaps.
