Plot Summary

In the sweltering Buenos Aires summer of 1974, seasoned judiciary agent Benjamín Espósito (character name) delved into the gruesome murder of Liliana Colotto de Morales, a tragedy that would test the limits of justice. Promising her husband, Ricardo, a swift capture and life imprisonment for the perpetrator, Espósito embarked on an investigation that would unravel a tangled web of deceit. He was aided by his trusted yet troubled partner, Pablo Sandoval, and the newly appointed department chief, Irene Menéndez-Hastings.

As Espósito dug deeper, he discovered that Romano, his rival, had hastily accused two construction workers, including a Bolivian immigrant, of the crime, only to later reveal that both men had been coerced into false confessions. This revelation sparked a firestorm of indignation within Espósito, who sensed that something far more sinister was at play.

The breakthrough came when Espósito scrutinized old photographs of Liliana, kindly provided by Ricardo. The images revealed a recurring figure, Isidoro Gómez, fixated on the victim. Espósito and Sandoval decided to pay Gómez’s mother a clandestine visit in Chivilcoy, where they uncovered letters exchanged between Gómez and his mother. However, their actions did little to advance the investigation, instead earning them disfavor among their superiors.

Meanwhile, Ricardo’s well-intentioned yet ill-advised phone call to Gómez’s mother inadvertently allowed the suspect to remain at large. The case would eventually be closed, leaving Espósito with a sense of frustration and unease.

A year later, in 1975, Espósito chanced upon Ricardo at Retiro train station, only to discover that he had been searching for Gómez across multiple stations. Convinced by Irene to reopen the investigation, Espósito became increasingly obsessed with uncovering the truth.

In a moment of drunken revelry, Sandoval stumbled upon an unexpected connection between the letters and Racing Football Club’s footballers. This revelation led Espósito and Sandoval to attend a match between Racing and Huracán, hoping to track down Gómez among the enthusiastic crowd.

As they combed through the stadium, Espósito and Sandoval finally pinpointed their suspect amidst the sea of fans. However, a sudden goal sparked chaos, allowing Gómez to slip away. A thrilling chase ensued, culminating in his apprehension by the security guards as he invaded the pitch.

In a move that would later prove disastrous, Irene employed unorthodox methods to extract a confession from Gómez, exploiting his vulnerabilities and masculinity. The suspect was subsequently tried and sentenced, only to be bailed out by Romano one month later, who had sinister plans to use Gómez as a hitman for the right-wing faction of the Peronist Party.

As Espósito struggled to reverse this new development, he was thwarted by Romano’s intervention. In a poignant moment, Espósito informed Ricardo that his wife’s killer would never face justice, leaving both men with a sense of despair and helplessness in the face of corruption and injustice.

The aftermath of Sandoval’s brutal murder is a stark reminder of the unforgiving nature of fate. Espósito (character name) returns to find his friend lying in a pool of blood, the room ransacked, and his own pictures carelessly scattered about. The chilling realization dawns on him that Gómez/Romano has orchestrated a hit squad to eliminate him, but Sandoval had selflessly taken the fall, sacrificing himself to protect Espósito’s life. Overwhelmed by fear, Espósito goes into hiding for a decade in Jujuy Province, seeking solace among Irene’s cousins.

Ten years later, Espósito re-emerges in Buenos Aires, only to discover that Gómez has vanished into thin air and Irene has moved on with her life, now married with two children. As the past begins to unravel, Espósito seeks closure by visiting Ricardo, who had long since relocated to a remote cottage in the countryside. However, their reunion is marred by the weight of Ricardo’s secrets and the unspoken truth about Gómez’s disappearance.

Ricardo’s explosive reaction when confronted about his wife’s death serves as a stark reminder that some wounds are too deep to heal. His confession about kidnapping and murdering Gómez years prior sends Espósito fleeing, but not before he recalls Ricardo’s vow of a “life sentence” for the imprisoned Gómez. As Espósito returns to Buenos Aires, he finds himself drawn to Sandoval’s grave, paying his respects to the friend who gave his life to save him.

Finally, with the truth finally within reach, Espósito makes his way to Irene’s office, prepared to confess his long-held feelings for her. But instead of a warm welcome, she asks him to close the door, leaving him wondering what lies ahead for them.
