Plot Summary

In the quaint, small-town atmosphere of Blue Springs, Montana, high school senior Roy Chutney (played by) navigates a life marked by emotional isolation. His strained relationship with his mother Evangeline and prolonged absence from his father’s life have left deep scars, making it no surprise that Roy is devastated when he learns of his father’s passing. The crushing blow is compounded when he’s cut from the school football team, further eroding his self-esteem.

To cope, Roy indulges in beer-fueled escapades with his best friend Tracy Two Dogs and a budding romance with Skyla, a charismatic barmaid at a local tavern. However, Roy’s brief stint on the high school gridiron seems to have left an indelible mark on Gideon Ferguson, a larger-than-life character who coaches an unsanctioned six-man football team in his spare time. When he’s not delivering newspapers or attempting to launch a singing career at nearby honky-tonks, Gideon is driven by a passion for the game and a keen eye for talent.

Gideon’s interest in Roy is piqued when he sees potential in the young man, and he extends an invitation to join his unconventional team. Emboldened by Gideon’s faith in him, Roy decides to take the plunge, convincing his friends Tracy and Russ to join him on this unorthodox journey. As Roy becomes more entrenched in six-man football, he begins to rediscover his confidence, but it soon becomes apparent that this newfound sense of purpose does little to address the deeper questions plaguing him: what lies ahead for him in life, and where does Skyla fit into the equation?

As Gideon’s unwavering enthusiasm for Roy grows, whispers begin to circulate around town, suggesting that Gideon may be more than just a devoted coach. With these rumors swirling, Roy is faced with an unexpected conundrum: what lies behind Gideon’s all-consuming interest in him?
